Carlo Antonelli, an engineer from Genoa, gets mugged and decides to take justice into his own hands. At first the muggers seem to get the upper hand, but then he's helped by Tommy, a young robber who takes his side.
After criminal gangs wreak havoc in the streets of Italy, a take-no-guff police commissioner forms a highly trained band of motorcycle riding cops to stop them.
The police are defeated, says the original Italian title. Marcel Bozzuffi overcomes the violence running rampant on the streets by forming a squad of special forces. His right hand man is Riccardo Salvino. They are after Valli, played by Vittorio Mazzogiorno. He is a really nasty character. At the start of the story, he's demanding protection from businesses. Those who don't pay are blown up by remote control after two thugs posing as telephone repairmen plant bombs in their pay phones.
The story involves several coincidences, which we can forgive. They keep the action moving along at a good clip in this very well-photographed picture.
There's little here that isn't a familiar element in other such crime stories, but this film holds our interest by deftly switching the focus from one character to another and by its good cinematography. There is some thoughtful exposition of the pros and cons of forming a stunt squad. Also, Mazzogiorno does a very good job of bringing his criminal character to life.
There is a pimp informant who helps Bozzuffi. He's played by Nello Pazzafini, a recognizable supporting actor. Bad guy Valli wants to dish out revenge on anyone ratting on him and that includes this pimp.
Tracking down the elusive Valli proves to be difficult. Bozzuffi won't lay down and be defeated.
