Wonderful 70's Time Capsule
14 October 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Malibu Beach, one of the 3 movies made by Crown International Pictures (The Pom Pom Girls and Van Nuys Blvd being the others) is a cinematic guilty pleasure. Sure the acting is not award winning but the unknown cast does their best and all look to be having a great time. And who wouldn't? The 70's were about letting go and feeling good. Of course this film belongs to the genre of the teen comedy/sexploitation category. There are plenty of shots with naked breasts and bare bottoms (both male and female) but to appreciate this time capsule of a movie, you have to look beyond that. Crown had a habit of producing films at that time that caught the vibe of what it was to be a teenager back then. The music, the atmosphere and the attitude are all there. If you watch Malibu Beach and The Pom Pom Girls (another film I recommend if you enjoy low budget sex comedies), you will notice that the producers borrowed the same props from The Pom Pom Girls and used them in Malibu Beach: Laurie's house in The Pom Pom Girls is the same one they used as Dina's house in Malibu Beach and the cheerleading costumes are the same. Bill Adler is also back. The music is similar. Susan Player Jurreau (yes singer Al's wife) is also back. So why do I recommend this and others like The Pom Pom Girls,Van Nuys Blvd and others of this genre in time? Because it is harmless, cinematic fun. And everyone can appreciate that feel good vibe where only films like these can take you.
