Sella Turcica (2010)

30 December 2010 10:41 AM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Fred Vogel

Written by: Fred Vogel, Shelby Vogel, Don Moore

Cast: Damien A. Maruscak, Camille Keaton, Jade Risser, Harvey Daniels, Sean P. McCarthy

Fred Vogel has gained a reputation as one of independent horror's most notorious filmmakers. With movies like The Redsin Tower and the August Underground series, Vogel and his production house, Toetag Pictures, have become synonymous with graphic, controversial fare, which makes Vogel's latest project, Sella Turcica, somewhat puzzling to me.

I came to Sella Turcica having never seen a Fred Vogel film. Sure, I've heard about his flicks for years, and I've always meant to see them. Really I have. I love gore as much as, and maybe more than, the next guy. At first, Vogel's movies were too hard to locate. By the time they’d become easily available, the moment had passed. They fell into the category of films I vowed to catch up with later. »

Steven R. Monroe's I Spit on Your Grave remake is coming out in UK cinemas on January 21st, 2011, and Anchor Bay UK has made an exclusive new teaser trailer for it, which will be the first glimpse unsuspecting cinemagoers in the UK will get of this highly controversial new film.

Now, Anchor Bay Entertainment completes the grisly circle of revenge with the February 8, 2011 release of the unrated I Spit on Your Grave – both the 1978 original classic and the state-of-the-art 2010 remake - on high-definition Blu-ray™ and DVD. Sound On Sight’s Best Films of 2010 part 4

29 December 2010 12:48 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

#1 – Black Swan

Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Darren Aronofsky does not have a medium setting. However one might feel about any of this films – from the agitated anti-drug parable Requiem for a Dream to the time-bending metaphysical sci-fi mini-epic The Fountain to working-man’s tragedy The Wrestler – it’s difficult to argue that he holds back in any respect. Black Swan acts as a sort of greatest-hits of Aronofsky’s past pet themes – contorted bodies (Requiem), pathological obsession (Pi), and the transformational/destructive properties of the performing arts (Wrestler), but in execution it takes a bold leap in a different direction, throwing caution to the wind and delivering an over-the-top, consistently heightened, and gloriously insane film that isn’t afraid to skirt with the ridiculous in order to engage with its high-art millieu and troubled central figure.

Both a deeply Freudian melodrama and a body-horror nightmare, Black Swan is anything but subtle. »

New Concept Art For ‘Behind The Walls’ Shows Off Graphic Noir Goodness

28 December 2010 1:19 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Behind the Walls has an important claim to fame: it’s the first ever live-action French movie filmed in 3D. That’s a lot like being the first ever Polish high jumper to clear 10 feet on a sunny day when the wind was blowing easterly, but it’s a claim to fame nonetheless. Perhaps this new concept art (especially the giant rat) will help that fame along. Of course, having international super model Laetitia Casta doesn’t hurt either. The film focuses on a woman who sequesters herself in order to write a novel who finds a sealed room in the house and begins having nightmarish hallucinations. Basically, it’s the plot from I Spit on Your Grave without the rape. Check out the beautiful concept art for yourself: So there’s a live shot of Laetitia Casta in there, too. Hopefully that doesn’t ruin your day. This will mark the first feature from the directing »

2010 Sound On Sight Staff Award Winners

22 December 2010 3:43 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

A few weeks ago I posted the nominations for the Sound On Sight staff awards. In December the Sound On Sight website celebrated it’s two year anniversary. In a short span of time we have quickly grown in popularity across the globe and certified a strong respected critical voice. Although most of us are not actual film critics but rather movie buffs, our team has time and time again exceeded any expectations in providing work of quality not quantity.

The Sound On Sight Staff Awards is not meant to be seen as a competition between our contributors. Instead it is really a way to say thank you to everyone who worked so hard. It is also meant to showcase some of our best work from the past twelve months. As announced on our 250th episode of Sound On Sight Radio, we decided that we just couldn’t choose between our staff. »

Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide DVD Review

21 December 2010 5:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Okay, so here’s a quick question for you all … how many dog owners amongst you have suddenly experienced man’s best friend exhibit unusually disturbing behavioural tics after sitting them down in front of the television and watching a few horror movies together?

Anyone? No? No sudden canine savagery? No impulsive howling at the moon? No gratuitous tearing of flesh? No violent rending of bone? Not even any unwelcome soiling of carpets?

I only ask this question as, in regards to the Video Nasties furore of the mid-Eighties, Conservative MP Graham Bright once (in)famously appeared on television and categorically stated that “I believe there is research taking place and it will show that these films not only affect young people …  but I believe they affect dogs as well.”

But regardless of whether such research will mean poor Fido sadly misses out on his one opportunity to catch “The Beast In Heat »

Finals Week: The Rise of Women in Horror Fandom and Film

20 December 2010 9:16 PM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

By James Morgart

“There is no pleasure. There is no pain. There is only skin.” - Pinhead, Hellraiser III

“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi

Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men. »

Sella Turcica and Zombies Bringing Anti-War Messages One Bite at a Time: A Horror Movie Review

17 December 2010 4:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*Some spoilers here.

Director: Fred Vogel.

Writers: Don Moore Shelby Vogel, and Fred Vogel.

Sella Turcica is a film from ToeTag Pictures, which spotlights the horrors of war in Iraq. As the tagline says: "for Brad the war is over...for his family it's just begun." This is very true for the film, with the central character showing that zombies have a taste for drama and family members too. This title was released in July of this year and the title translates to Turkish saddle. More importantly the title allude to a surgery that Brad has had in the back of this skull, before returning from Iraq. The results of a military experiment are particularly gruesome, with this tried and true plotline reanimated once again.

The particulars involve ex-Marine Brad returning from his action oriented tour in Iraq to a quiet and calm family. Once there, Brad begins to leak »

Finals Week: I Spit on This Movie: Rape in Day of the Woman/I Spit On Your Grave

12 December 2010 3:21 PM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

That's right, folks! It's Finals Week again, when we post academic articles about horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and action flicks written by our extremely educated staff. All week long you can read these slightly modified but always theory-filled papers and do your best to follow along.

I Spit on This Movie: Rape in Day of the Woman/I Spit On Your Grave by Heidi Martinuzzi

In the recent remake of the 1980 exploitation horror film “I Spit On Your Grave”, some scenes involving the protagonist, Jennifer – a young woman brutally raped by 4 men who seeks a violent and bloody revenge – were written out because the director felt that it was unrealistic that Jennifer would actively seduce each rapist before killing him. Not only did the director feel that taking out this almost insulting aspect of the original movie made his new version more realistic, he felt that it also eliminated the ‘exploitation’ factor from the movie. »

Two new UK posters for ‘I Spit On Your Grave’

3 December 2010 2:09 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The good folks at Anchor Bay have just sent over these two new posters for Steven R. Monroe’s controversial remake of the 70’s video nasty I Spit On Your Grave, which stars Sarah Butler, Rodney Eastman, Jeff Branson, Daniel Franzese, Chad Lindberg, and Andrew Howard; and tells the horrific tale of:

…city dweller Jennifer Hills (Butler), a city girl who rents an isolated cabin in the country to write her latest novel. On one terrifying evening, a group of local lowlifes break into the cabin and overpower, assault and rape Jennifer, ultimately leaving her for dead. But Jennifer miraculously survives her ordeal, consumed with hell-borne vengeance for those who wronged her, and repays their heinous acts in gruesome ways that these lowlifes never thought imaginable.

I saw I Spit On Your Grave at this years London Film4 FrightFest and was blown away by just how good the film is. »
