This is the first of three adaptations of Jorge Amado's novel. The second was made in the U.S. as "Kiss me Goodbye" (1982) and the second as the Brazilian "telenovela", " Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos" (1998).
Leniza Mayer, the singer in the casino sequence, played by Betty Faria, is a leading role of the movie "A Estrela Sobe", also directed by Bruno Barreto. In this film, Leniza Mayer is played by Betty Faria too.
Bruno Barreto was born in 1955 and this film came out in 1976 when he was only 20 or 21. He started working on this film at age 19. Considering it was the largest grossing film in Brazil between its 1976 release and 1997, the 19-year-old did a great job.
