The opening credits sequence utilizes psychedelic light show effects done by director Allan Arkush with his friend Ben Haller in Arkush's basement in Van Nuys. They were leftovers from Arkush's days creating these sorts of effects to play behind acts in rock concerts.
Original director Nicholas Niciphor, a.k.a. Henry Suso, was a USC film student who had made some excellent shorts. He had been in an agent's office pitching himself in order to get representation, when the agent called Roger Corman. As it turns out, Corman and others at New World had seen and enjoyed Niciphor's shorts and Niciphor subsequently got hired to do a re-write for and direct "Deathsport".
Nicholas Niciphor had recently graduated from USC when he was hired to co-write and direct the film. He ended up being fired and replaced by Allan Arkush who later admitted that he had no way of saving the picture. Niciphor is credited under the pseudonym, Henry Suso.
Brenda Venus who plays Adriann, the mother of the little girl taken by mutants, was in a well-documented relationship with writer Henry Miller at the time. Well-documented because Venus was in her 20s while Miller was in his 80s.
