The cave scenes with the mutants were shot at Bronson Caves in Bronson Canyon. When a stuntman playing a mutant was set on fire, another actor portraying a mutant was also accidentally set on fire.

At one point, Claudia Jennings had to be physically removed from the set as she was drunk and high on cocaine. (Jennings had a well-documented cocaine addiction at the time.)

One of the reasons why Nicholas Niciphor was fired was because he repeatedly clashed with the film's stars, David Carradine and Claudia Jennings. Carradine broke his nose in an on-set altercation.

The opening credits sequence utilizes psychedelic light show effects done by director Allan Arkush with his friend Ben Haller in Arkush's basement in Van Nuys. They were leftovers from Arkush's days creating these sorts of effects to play behind acts in rock concerts.

Original director Nicholas Niciphor, a.k.a. Henry Suso, was a USC film student who had made some excellent shorts. He had been in an agent's office pitching himself in order to get representation, when the agent called Roger Corman. As it turns out, Corman and others at New World had seen and enjoyed Niciphor's shorts and Niciphor subsequently got hired to do a re-write for and direct "Deathsport".

The motorcycles were basically street Yamahas modified with aluminum, which gave them too much weight and made the edges too sharp.

Nicholas Niciphor had recently graduated from USC when he was hired to co-write and direct the film. He ended up being fired and replaced by Allan Arkush who later admitted that he had no way of saving the picture. Niciphor is credited under the pseudonym, Henry Suso.

Brenda Venus who plays Adriann, the mother of the little girl taken by mutants, was in a well-documented relationship with writer Henry Miller at the time. Well-documented because Venus was in her 20s while Miller was in his 80s.
