Synopses For Supergirl And The Flash Season Premieres Released

22 September 2017 10:07 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

With the next “super season” set to commence in just under three weeks, it’s only understandable that The CW pulls out all the stops in order to assure that viewers come back for another helping. And usually when we’re that close to any specific episode airing, synopses are bound to surface online, effectively bringing some minor spoilers along with them. In this case, that rule applies to fan favorites Supergirl and The Flash.

First, let’s talk about Supergirl, since that particular show will be the first from the Arrowverse to make its fall debut. In “Girl of Steel,” we’ll see the titular heroine face the existential crisis we’ve been expecting ever since the first footage from season 3 was shown at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Still, we don’t expect her to be down in the dumps for too long since more recent promos »

Ken Burns’ ‘Vietnam War’ Sparks International Interest

15 September 2017 5:51 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last month, Lynn Novick traveled to Vietnam with her new documentary about the American war there, co-directed with Ken Burns. Novick had previously spent time in the country, gathering material for the doc, which tells the story of the war from both the American and Vietnamese perspective. On her return, she held four screenings of a condensed version of the film — one for living witnesses interviewed for the series, one for writers and critics, and two more for public audiences in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, respectively. Novick was wary.

“It’s always with some trepidation that we show something that we’ve worked on to the people who lived through it, because how’s it going to jibe with what they remember and what they saw?” she says. “But it was amazing. We heard over and over again the feeling that the film was honest and realistic in depicting the true suffering and misery of »

Paul Schrader on the Extinction of the Human Race and His New Film ‘First Reformed’

15 September 2017 2:51 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s no surprise that Paul Schrader, a filmmaker associated with such dark classics as “Taxi Driver” and “American Gigolo,” has a pessimistic streak. But it’s still bracing to hear him argue that humanity, as we know it, is unlikely to last through the next century.

In an interview at the Toronto Film Festival, Schrader said he believes that global warming is accelerating at such a rate that there’s little that can be done to arrest the ecological changes. His Cassandra-like streak informs “First Reformed,” his new drama that’s been screening to strong reviews at the fall festivals. The film grapples with issues of faith while also sounding a warning about the destruction of the natural world. It follows Ethan Hawke as a small-town priest who toys with becoming a suicide bomber in the service of a radical form of environmentalism. Schrader spoke to Variety about religion in film, working »

The Coming Home actor, 78, was all smiles in a classic navy suit, which he paired with a light blue shirt and charcoal crosshatch tie.

Toronto Film Review: ‘Youth’

9 September 2017 12:50 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Mainland Chinese cinema is bloated with youth romances wallowing in ’90s nostalgia, yet this pivotal stage in life has never appeared as pure, beatific and cruel as depicted in “Youth,” the latest from Chinese box office king Feng Xiaogang. Tracking the tempestuous fates of a People’s Liberation Army (Pla) dance troupe from the Cultural Revolution to the ’90s, the film serves as a paean to idealism and endurance, yet the word “heart-breaking” comes to mind scene after scene.

Even if China’s millennials has no time for the vintage subject, a large contingent of older viewers who collectively share Feng’s sense of nostalgia should lend the epic heart-felt support. On the other hand, the film’s long 146-minute running time and seeming glorification of the military may influence overseas reception.

Without the technical contrivances of “I Am Not Madame Bovary,” Feng employs traditional craftsmanship to draw a sweeping historical canvas with profound human upheavals that »

It’s another blow for Trevorrow, whose latest film The Book of Henry was savaged by critics and audiences. Read more here.

Snoke Secrets

With just a few months to go until the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there are still several questions surrounding the film, particularly over the Sequel Trilogy’s central villains. J.J. Abrams didn’t reveal much about Supreme Leader Snoke in The Force Awakens, and director Rian Johnson isn’t looking to elaborate any further either. »
