Deven Verma first film as director.
There were several stories of Deven Verma owing Sharmila Tagore money for the film. When she refused to give dates until she got paid, Deven Verma changed the screenplay and focused on Nirupa Roy. For example Nirupa was kidnapped, not Sharmila.
Pablo Cruise song "Zero To Sixty In Five" is used in the film. The song appears when Amitabh Bachchan approaches the old man in the party with a humble request. The old man is drunk and rips Amitabh's note.
Besharam and Faraar were the two movies Amitabh co-starred with Sharmila. Both were started when he was not yet a big star and she was. The tables had turned by the time the movies released. Neither movie did well. in the 1980s Sharmila was cast opposite the senior Amitabh in Desh Premee. Decades later she played his wife in Viruddh.
In 1973, Deven Verma decided to make a film titled "Naam Bade". Deven was already making a film titled " Bada Kabootar". The film was getting delayed and that left Deven with 7 month's to do nothing. So he decided to make " Naam Bade". The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Deven Verma, newcomer named Mona ( who later used the screen name Jyothika Rao then finally Rekha Rao), Nirupa Roy,A.K. Hangal. After shooting for 1 year, Deven decided to change the script into a action film. He scrapped Naam Bade. He then started a action film titled Be-Sharam. He retained his previous star cast. After shooting a little with Rekha Rao, he finally replaced her with Sharmila Tagore. Deven Verma had discovered Rekha Rao (aka Jyothika Rao, Mona) and was already making a film titled "Yasmeen" with her in 1972. That film kept getting delayed and finally shelved. Deven signed Amjad Khan for Besharam for the villain role right after Sholay. But the film kept getting delaying for various reasons.
