Characters on the show have been seen having sexual intercourse with one another, and these scenes can range from mild to moderate. Nudity has been seen on the show, such as the female characters taking a shower. Female characters have been seen naked, some of which their bare breasts have been shown.

Violence may be considered one of the biggest issues on the show. Fight scenes are seen most frequently in almost all episodes. The violence can range from moderate to strong. Often when one character fights another, it can also be quite gory at times. Self-harm and sexual violence (rape) is also an issue.

There is quite a lot of profanity used in the show. The words 'bitch', 'bastard', 'bloody', 'hell', 'damn' and 'crap' are used quite frequently. Other words that have not been used quite so frequently include 'bullshit', 'shit', 'piss' and 'arse'. The words 'slut' and 'whore' are also mentioned.

Although alcohol is banned within prisons, many characters have had a drink, as they find ways to smuggle it in. One character in particular made her own alcohol. Some were alcoholics.

Drugs is one of the big issues on the show. Many characters have been seen taking drugs (on and off screen). Some characters are drug addicts, some take them occasionally and others are forced to take then against their will. Drug dealing was one of the main causes of this.

Most of the characters smoke cigarettes. Some of the male characters have been seen smoking cigars.

Most of the scenes can be quite frightening and intense. Violence and drugs have caused some quite disturbing scenes throughout the series. Scenes showing how drugs can affect the characters have been somewhat distressing at times. Violence is the main issue which would cause viewers to become distressed. Some scenes and storylines with include self-harm. Some include characters hanging themselves and cutting their wrists, which have been seen on-screen. Characters inflicting pain on others during fight scenes. Rape scenes, which may be seen off-screen but can cause distress. One female character in particular who owns a pair of leather gloves, and would put them on if to start a fight or to give unauthorised strip searches to the female prisoners in the hallway.
