Something gets under Eva Green's skin in Penny Dreadful

Showtime’s critically acclaimed horror drama TV series Penny Dreadful stars Josh Hartnett (40 Days and 40 Nights), Timothy Dalton (The Rocketeer) and Eva Green (Perfect Sense).

The show sets out to completely reinvent some of literature’s most famous characters. Icons of terror such as Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul – even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations. Set in the 19th Century, the stories are in the style of the British “penny dreadful” publications of that time period, lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks.

Created by three-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo) and co-exec-produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the »

Empire Pictures

It’s rare that you’ll see a movie, TV show, book or video game with a scientist in a starring role. For the brain boxes on the side of good, they’re usually relegated to supporting roles, playing the part of Basil Exposition or giving the real heroes the justification and/or technology to go fight the bad guys or stop the Sharknadoes or whatever. That’s because what most scientists do day-to-day is hang around in labs, looking at things under microscopes and massaging their brains to come up with new, ground breaking theories. We assume.

Then you have the evil geniuses, those who use their scientific knowledge as a force for bad. They’re in direct opposition to the heroes and their smarty pants sidekicks, but at least these lab coat-wearing jerks get to be more screen time as the main antagonists rather than supporting protagonists. »

Fox’s Emma Watts Re-Ups For Three Years After Robust Summer

14 August 2014 11:14 AM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

As Stacey Snider gets closer to leaving DreamWorks to take a senior position under 20th Century Fox Film chairman/CEO Jim Gianopulos, questions have been rampant about the role for Tcf production president Emma Watts, who led the studio to its most killer summer in a long time. Gianopulos has answered some of those questions by staking Watts to a new three year deal.

“Emma is a proven and extremely talented production executive who has consistently led her division to great success, most recently through her stellar contributions to our remarkable summer slate,” Gianopulos said. “We look forward to her continuing contributions to our creative achievements in the years ahead.”

Last month, Fox became the first studio to pass $1 billion in domestic box office – and $3 billion worldwide – fueled by The Other Woman, the $730 million global grosser X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the »

Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway are coy about 'Penny Dreadful' season 2

29 July 2014 12:32 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

San Diego - When we last left "Penny Dreadful's" most eligible bachelors things weren't necessarily coming up roses. Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) had transformed into a werewolf type creature (although it turns out he isn't aware of what happens to him when he "blacks out" and goes wild) and suffered through the death of his lover, Brona Croft (Billie Piper). Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) had his heart unceremoniously broken by Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and found himself once more immortal and alone. Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) couldn't kill the Creature (Rory Kinnear) he created that was threatening to destroy everyone around him.  Instead, he took Ms. Croft's life earlier than her terminal sickness would have allowed so that he could properly transform her into a "bride" for his monstrous creation. These gentlemen of questionable morals and virtues are three reasons why John Logan's Showtime series is so fascinating. »

As Comic-Con ramps up, the Television Critics Association's summer 2014 press tour is winding down, and a tidbit of news has come out about "Penny Dreadful" Season 2's big bad along with full details on the show's Sdcc signings and contest to attend the post-panel party.

If you're caught up and ready to hear more about Season 2, Showtime president David Nevins said during the network's TCA presentation for hit horror drama "Penny Dreadful," "It's a really big cosmology, and it's gonna get bigger next year."

What type of villain can fans expect next? Nevins continued, "There's a great antagonist next year played by Helen McCrory... Season 1's antagonist was sort of an inhuman character. It'll be good to have a more human antagonist." McCrory (pictured above right) plays Madame Kali, the renowned spiritualist and medium who hosted the memorable titular "Seance" in Episode 1.02.

Season Finale Review: 'Penny Dreadful' - Farewell to a daughter, hello to a bride

29 June 2014 9:31 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

There have been numerous interweaving and not so interweaving plots during this inaugural season of "Penny Dreadful," but there have been two constants.  The first has been the search by Sir Malcom (Timothy Dalton) and Ms. Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) to save Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) from the clutches of a vampire demon.  The second has been the systematic haunting of Doctor Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, Jr.) by his first creation (Rory Kinnear), a vindictive son who brutally demands a bride from his creator.  If the series finale told us anything it's that creator John Logan had no intention of dragging these story lines out any more than necessary.  More so, Logan appears to have a lot more in store for "Dreadful's" unexpected group of flawed "heroes." Two of the series' best performances have been from Green and Dalton.  Their characters have behaved like two adversaries forced to grit their teeth »

[Editorial] Penny Dreadful’s Eva Green Has Made Possession Scary Again

24 June 2014 9:58 AM, PDT | | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Have you been seeing the work Eva Green is doing on Showtime's Penny Dreadful? It is stellar. No, make that spellbinding and, dare I say it, scary. I'm getting ahead of myself here. Let me first ask the question: Are you even watching Penny Dreadful? Our own Paul Doro gave its first episode a positive review before its airing in May. I'll admit, I was a bit apprehensive about the show after seeing the series debut, but - sticking to my "2-3 episode rule" - over time, I've become engrossed in this horror series which stitches together a world populated by various classic horror characters like Victor Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Dorian Gray, Dracula, the Frankenstein monster. There are other notable characters on the periphery of this show waiting to enter. They're either mentioned or hinted at, sending viewers like me into a state of excitement thinking about the possibilities in »

The 7 Gayest Things About “Penny Dreadful”

24 June 2014 8:16 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Penny Dreadful creator and showrunner John Logan has said that his interest in classic horror stories comes partly from his identity as a gay man. He’s certainly given his gorgeously gory show a gay sensibility, and that’s part of what makes it so entertaining. Here are The 7 Gayest Things About Penny Dreadful

1. Dr. Frankenstein’s Body Issues

Would you believe I’m a leg man?

Sensitive, intelligent, Victor Frankenstein loves the romantic poetry of Keats and seems inordinately fond of his latest creation, the scarred, bug-eyed, yet totally doable Proteus.  (Hey Doc, is that a physical examination or a lover’s caress?)

Unfortunately, Frankenstein’s first creation is a vicious troll and can’t stand to see his creator happy. So poor Proteus is…. splitsville and until the Doctor makes him a Bride, the original monster is going to keep killing everyone that Frankie hangs out with.

Have you ever considered the job of Location Manager? I can quickly confess that I have not despite often considering plentiful jobs that go on behind the scenes on motion pictures. The Credits discusses the complicated work with Catou Kearney the Location Manager of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It's a technically challenging movie, not least of which because they shot so much outdoors and needed a lushly overgrown forest.

The apes ... have created a vast forest utopia. Finding such a place, one that looks as abundant as the script demands, but that could also support a large crew and a ton of equipment, takes months of research, legwork, and a few thousand phone calls. Kearney is a seasoned location manager, and relishes the opportunity. “It’s like putting a ten-thousand piece puzzle together,” she says. “When that last piece falls into place, there’s nothing like it. »

Daniel Radcliffe's 'Frankenstein' take: New title, plot details

As anyone who’s read Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel (or seen one of the many film adaptions of the story, now in the public domain) can tell you, the creature most people think of as “Frankenstein” should really be called “Frankenstein’s monster.” 20th Century Fox’s upcoming take on the tale, however, has a title that makes the delineation even clearer: It’s called Victor Frankenstein, emphasizing the man, not the monster.

The film, announced last year, will star James McAvoy (X-Men) as the eponymous doctor and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) as Igor, his hunchbacked lab assistant. »
