Sex & Nudity

  • Suggested MPAA description: Rated 'R' for Intense Sequences of Terror/Violence and Some Graphic Disturbing Images.
  • 1/10
  • Ballerinas are central in the theme (wear tightfitting tutus)
  • A guy kisses a girl, but not sexually.

Violence & Gore

  • 10/10
  • In the infamous opening sequence, a woman has her face pressed against a window by an unseen figure as her friend bangs on doors pleading for help. The girl is then shoved through and is stabbed in the chest twice. She falls on her knees and the killer stabs her in the chest a third time. Blood flows from her mouth. The killer then ties her up with a cord and stabs her in the chest four more times. (The fourth time, we see a graphic close-up of the knife piercing her heart.) The girl's head smashes through a large skylight and she falls through, the chord strangling her. The girl's friend is killed by debris that pins her to the ground. After all this, the camera pans across the aftermath.
  • A man is killed by his dog. We see the dog biting the man in the neck, intercut with brief close-ups of flesh and muscle tissue being torn out. Very graphic and brutal
  • A woman tries to escape a murderer , but she falls right into some razor wires and becomes bloody. And then, in an extreme close-up, the girl has her throat slit.
  • A resurrected corpse is seen. She has metal pins stuck in her eyes, and she is covered in blood.
  • It's implied that an explosion burns and kills several people, although only the explosion itself is seen while screams are heard. We see many people with blood pouring down their faces and heads.

Profanity

  • 4/10
  • Mild language
  • 3 uses of bitch, 1 use of damn, and the rest is name-calling (busy buddy, idiot, snake, etc..)

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • 4/10
  • Some use of cigarettes and alcohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • 9/10
  • The opening scene is famous for being one of the scariest and frightening scenes in horror. (See "Violence & Gore" for more details)
  • The ending is very startling and terrifying.
  • The entire film has a very intense atmosphere with vibrant colors and blaring music.
  • The set design, cinematography, and editing intentionally violate traditional rules about filmmaking (similar to "The Shining") to make the film even more disturbing.
  • Overall score: 31/50. Often considered to be one of the scariest horror films of all time.
  • Recommended MPAA Rating: Rated R for sequences of graphic bloody brutal violence and gore, disturbing images, and brief language.
