Iffam: Udo Kier to Receive Career Award

Iffam: Udo Kier to Receive Career Award
Veteran German actor, Udo Kier is set to receive a career achievement award this week at the International Film Festival & Awards. With more than 200 films to his credit, he deserves an award for longevity, if nothing else.

In his career early days, Kier was associated with numerous horror and genre films, ranging from the niche, to the mainstream and art house. Some had titles like “Spermula,” “Oi Erotomaneis,” and “Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein.” But the 1970s also saw him star in notorious Bdsm drama “Story of O,” and Dario Argento’s horror classic “Suspiria.”

Since then he has built a career that stretched from Europe to Hollywood, and encompassed TV (“Berlin: Alexanderplatz,” “Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated”) as well as film. Hollywood roles include “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” “Blade” and disaster film “Armageddon.” Big-budget Euro-Chinese indie, “Iron Sky: The Coming Race” recently brought him to China to shoot.

Kier will be in be in Macau with one of

Interview: Don May, Jr. on Synapse Films’ Three-Year-Long Journey with the Suspiria 4K Restoration

  • DailyDead
It’s been a tough few years for Don May, Jr. and Jerry Chandler of Synapse Films, as they have worked tirelessly on the much-needed 4K restoration of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The proverbial light is officially at the end of that tumultuous tunnel, though, as the Suspiria Blu-ray is set to be released on December 19th, and the film enjoyed a wonderful resurgence over the last few months, thanks to various theatrical and festival screenings of their efforts (which you can read my thoughts on Here).

Daily Dead recently caught up with Don May, Jr. about the long road that he and his partner have traversed together over the last three years while working on the Suspiria 4K transfer, and he chatted about all the hiccups along the way, working with the film’s cinematographer Luciano Tovoli, getting feedback from the Maestro himself, and more.

‘Call Me by Your Name’ Director Luca Guadagnino Hates Actors Who ‘Act’: ‘It’s Almost Pornographic’ – Toolkit Podcast

‘Call Me by Your Name’ Director Luca Guadagnino Hates Actors Who ‘Act’: ‘It’s Almost Pornographic’ – Toolkit Podcast
Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer are racking up accolades and early awards for playing lovers in “Call Me by Your Name,” but director Luca Guadagnino insists he didn’t cast them as a a pair or because he sensed they would work well together.

“I felt that if I loved them and wanted them, they were going to want and love one another,” said Guadagnino when he was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It was a bet, but you always have to make a bet. Filmmakers are all charlatans, you have to pretend you know what you are doing and you have to pretend that you are doing something very deep, but sometimes you are just improvising.”

Guadagnino also did not spend much time rehearsing with the two actors beforehand. Shooting the film largely in chronological order, the director said he and his leads just “figured it

*Updated with the reported release date* "Do you know anything about witches?" Having been shaken to my core by the Goblin score while watching the 4K restoration of Suspiria at this year's Flashback Weekend in Chicago, I highly recommend you seek out the remastered screening if it plays anywhere near you (or several states away—it's that good). Luca Guadagnino Champions Suspiria As A Labor Of Love, But It’s Definitely Not A Remake

You’d have to cast your mind back to March of 2017 to remember the moment when Luca Guadagnino announced that filming had wrapped on Suspiria, a modern reinvention of Dario Argento’s Italian slasher. So what gives?

As the horror flick continues to simmer on the brink of release, Guadagnino spoke to Criterion (via Bloody Disgusting) about Suspiria‘s prolonged spell in post, and why he considers it to be a “very special film.” And though it was originally slated to arrive in 2017, judging by this latest status report – one in which the Italian filmmaker reveals that he still has three months to wrap things up – Suspiria may slip into 2018 after all.

I have three months until I finish it. It’s a very special film, and I’m proud of it. I wonder all the time how people will react to it, being that it is based on a masterpiece.

The Suspiria Remake Will Be Completely Different From The Original and The Director Says it's a "Very Personal Film"

Dario Argento's 1977 horror film Suspiria is one hell of a psychedelic horror masterpiece. That movie was a crazy wild ride! It's a one of a kind film that will never be able to be replicated. The director of the remake, Luca Guadagnino, knows this, which is why he's going to do something completely different with it. He's not looking to compete with the original film, he's just looking to give it a new flavor.

The movie has a fantastic cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, Tilda Swinton and Jessica Harper. Even though there's really no point in remaking this movie, it seems like it's in good hands and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Tilda Swinton previously talked to Allocine about the movie explaining that it's going to be completely different from the original, saying:

“It’s impossible to remake [Dario Argento’s] film.

12 Movies Daily Dead is Excited to See at Chicago’s Cinepocalypse 2017 Film Festival

  • DailyDead
Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.

For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Tilda Swinton says Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria is “another version, not a remake”

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is currently in post production on his newest film Suspiria, a remake of Dario Argento’s classic 1977 horror – although according to star Tilda Swinton, it’s not so much a “remake” as “another version”.

“It’s another version, not a remake,” Swinton told Allocine (via The Playlist). “It’s important to say it because we are ardent admirers of the film of Dario Argento, and it is impossible to [remake] this film. I accepted [it] because it will be a completely different movie! It’s inspired by the same story, but it goes in different directions. It’s semantics, of course, but I think people really have to understand that this is not a remake, because the word ‘remake’ gives the impression that we want to erase the original, and the opposite is what [we’re trying to do]. It’s going to sound a bit grandiloquent, but it’s like when Francis Bacon
