Smokey and the Bandit (1977) Poster

Goofs

Audio/visual unsynchronised

The Trans-Am has an automatic transmission, but the audio tracks repeatedly use engine sounds from a manually shifted car.

When the truck pulls up to the diner, the engine sound is that of a two-stroke Detroit Diesel engine. In the opening scene, when the truck engine starts it is a four stroke engine.

When Frog asks Bandit if they are really doing 110, the speedometer shows they're going 110km/h, not mph (they're only doing about 67mph).

Bandit says that it is 900 miles each way from Atlanta, GA to Texarkana, TX. It is actually 665 miles each way if taking the Interstates, or 622 miles if you take US-82, which is likely the route Bandit and Snowman took, since US-82 (erroneously referred to as "Interstate 82" by Silver-Tongued Devil) is mentioned at one point.

Just before Sheriff Justice gives his, "this car is evidence" discourse to the Alabama State Trooper he pulls up directly behind the Troopers vehicle (obvious by the lights and stickers on the door). Following the discourse, when Sheriff Justice tells the Trooper to F.O. Justice pulls straight forward where the Troopers vehicle should still be parked.

Interior shots show the Trans-Am to have an automatic transmission, but in several shots, it's evident a manual transmission model is used - When Bandit says to Snowman "Let's haul ass", he pulls an automatic shifter down into Low and rips away from Snowman's house. In the very next shot, when he takes off from the first traffic light, he revs the engine and dumps the clutch (only possible with a manual) to smoke the rear tires. When Bandit picks up Frog later, you can see him jam the shifter forward (into first gear), dump the clutch again, and shift into second gear causing the "bark" of the tires and sideways movement of the Trans-Am.

At one point in the movie, a radio transmission from a trucker calling himself "Silver-Tongued Devil" says that Bandit and Snowman are "near Fayetteville and Interstate 82". Interstate 82 is nowhere near that part of the country (Arkansas/Mississippi/Alabama), but instead is over 2,000 miles away in Oregon and Washington. The trucker should have said "US Highway 82" instead, as that highway DOES indeed exist in that part of the country. Furthermore, Interstate 82 didn't even exist yet at the time of this movie (1977) as construction of that route didn't even start until 1978 and wasn't completed and opened to traffic until 1988.

In the song at the opening scene, it is stated that Bandit, while traveling down a steep mountain road, "hit them brakes, found he had no air". Most tractor trucks, and practically all of them in the 1970s, operate with a triple-valve air brake system. Without going into details, if a truck actually lost all the air in the lines, the brakes would be applied, not disabled.
