Better than the first pilot
19 October 2011 | by See all my reviews

Hijinks abound aboard a ten-day Mexican cruise aboard the "Pacific Princess."

Second time up to bat for "The Love Boat." None of the cast from the first pilot is carried over, which is a good thing. Fred Grandy, Bernie Koppel and Ted Lange have an immediate chemistry as Gopher, Doc and Issac. But Quinn Redeker plays the captain very straight and rather intense, which seems all wrong for this sort of show. Diane Stilwell, as Sandy ("Your Cruise Director") is quite good, though, and it's a shame that she didn't make it to the series. She's a much better actor than Lauren Tewes. Just like the first pilot, the lounge act is among the regulars, but this time it's just one person, Amy, played by Candice Azzara. She's good, too but the character is clearly a fifth wheel and was dumped for the third and final pilot ("The New Love Boat").

The guest cast, including Craig Stevens, Lyle Waggoner, Robert Reed, Hope Lange and Celeste Holm deliver the goods in their respective stories, and the production is enhanced by significant location shooting aboard the real "Pacific Princess."
