Donald Sutherland investigates the stabbing-murder of a young woman
19 November 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Blood Relatives" (1978) is a Claude Chabrol film, a mystery, a police procedural and a psychological neo-noir, featuring Donald Sutherland as the cop investigating the stabbing murder of a 17-year old girl. The story opens with dark city views, then this murder that cannot be seen but is heard in the darkness.

Sutherland is excellent, continuing his characteristic underacting and showing his impressive ability to act with his expressive eyes and body language. Donald Pleasence steals the show briefly in a really striking scene playing a middle-aged man who courts 12-year old girls. The subsequent scene in which Sutherland interviews the girl is almost as good, as she fends off his inquiries. Another fine bit of acting is that of David Hemmings, as he seduces the young girl who was murdered. Director Chabrol really drew excellent performances from his cast.

A family of 4 has taken in this victim, Lisa Langlois, some time earlier, she being the husband's niece. Stephane Audran, losing the glamour in this one, is the mother who likes to drink. They have two teenagers, Aude Landry and Laurent Malet. In flashbacks based on the dead girl's diary, we discover that the two cousins fell in love and sex. This passed for Langlois who realized she could not marry Malet and who, having been awakened, cast her sexual net further.

This story is not your usual police procedural. Actual clues are almost non-existent. Sutherland relies heavily on interviews that enlighten him bit by bit on the relationships of everyone around the victim. His skilled conduct of these interviews is a key strong point of the story. Hiding beneath the placid surface of a family whose father was doing the "Christian" thing, as he puts it, in taking Langlois in, lurk turbulent emotions. The Pleasence and Hemmings characters show us ever-present sexual and love drives, thereby complementing the story's main themes. In this noir world, instability stemming from these drives is not really far away, becoming resentment, obsession and even murder.
