Roald Dahl is a beloved children's book author who scares the hell out of me. I don't want to know where he lived, who raised him, or why he decided to address kids as an occupation, because the man is so, so disturbing. His Matilda is grim, his James and the Giant Peach is twisted, and his most beloved novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a frightening, cruel morality tale set in a candy-colored dystopia. I'm happy to report that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film adaptation of Dahl's sugary absinthe dream starring Gene Wilder, Oscar winner Jack Albertson, and a crew of unknowns, is just as frightening and cruel as the source material. And it has a secret gay relevance that I figured out only last night! Hooray! Now it's the Best Movie Ever.
I'm sure you know the story, but I'll dutifully recount it: Charlie »

New "science" show Super Smart Animals launches this week (Wed, 8pm, BBC1) featuring Liz Bonnin travelling the world to meet the planet's cleverest creatures. Qualified biologist Bonnin presents YouTube hamster clips dressed up as scientific experiment. Look, a skateboarding dog! A fish on Mastermind! Guaranteed to keep super dumb humans yuck-yucking at their intellectual overlords for the duration.
Meanwhile on Wild India (Mon, 8pm, Nat Geo Wild) Sir Attenborough gives us a guided tour of India's wildlife with special focus this week on elephants. A new baby elephant runs the gamut of drought, fire and flood in its first six months, not to mention the Bengal tiger and King Cobra who both want to eat it. The massive adult elephants stand in a tight circle around it like minders keeping fans away from Prince. You can also enjoy a boa constrictor throttling and ingesting its furry prey like Denise Welch meeting one of One Direction. »

Chicago – Graham Greene’s haunting 1938 crime novel doesn’t deserve to be uttered in the same breath as Stephenie Meyer’s tween phenomenon, “Twilight.” Yet in the hands of British filmmaker Rowan Joffe, Greene’s masterwork loses its theological intrigue and becomes a self-conscious melodrama fueled by two grim lovers who could be dead ringers for Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.
Enter Pinkie (Sam Riley of “Control”), a pale-faced sociopath who becomes the leader of his underworld-dwelling gang despite the fact that he’s only 17. He doesn’t fit into modern society, and is an old soul at heart. His dark, brooding persona attracts the lustful gaze of Rose (Andrea Riseborough), a meek waitress with no life to call her own. She has no dreams or desires apart from romancing Pinkie, who treats her coldly and clearly harbors sinister intentions. All that’s missing is a shirtless werewolf to tear »
