It's not every week the Empire Podcast booth welcomes a knight of the realm. Sir Ridley Scott isn't one to stand on ceremony though, so all that silver-polishing and red-carpet-rolling was probably unnecessary. At 77, he's stil a man of action, happier getting out on location than cooped up in a soundstage and not content to rest on his substantial laurels. To the likes of The Duellists, Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise and Gladiator, he's now adding one of his finest films of recent years, The Martian. On a very special podcast Special, he chatted about a wide range of topics, from his love of The Martian's humour to his finest big-screen moments to those projects that got away. Nb Dino is Dino De Laurentiis, not Dino from The Flintstones. The Martian is out on October 2. Head here for Empire's review. »

When David Puttnam receives the Grand Prix of the Americas at the Montreal World Film Festival, the award will come as part honor, part vindication for the veteran Oscar-winning producer.
“I retired from filmmaking 18 years ago and you do wonder if anyone remembers you existed,” says Puttnam, 74. “So it’s a very nice re-affirmation that you did have a successful career and you must have done something right.”
The award is also very timely, as 2015 is an important year for Puttnam. Like some ex-mob figure who thought he’d finally escaped his former life, he’s found himself back on active duty. “Much to my amazement, I’m making another film, ‘Arctic 30,’ ” he says.
Puttnam was persuaded to produce the Greenpeace environmental advocacy thriller in part because of his own activism. “I took the world’s first climate change bill (through the British Parliament), and I’m very proud of that, »

Ridley Scott has worked in many genres over his career —period pieces (“The Duellists”), war movies (“Black Hawk Down”), con man movies (“Matchstick Men”), sword and sandal epics ( “Gladiator”) and even soggy, feel-good pap (“A Good Year”). Last year’s “Exodus: Gods and Kings” had a small faction of staunch vocal supporters, but his landmark sci-fi masterwork “Blade Runner” marks the last time the director made a film that could credibly be described as visionary. I’ll never forget the first time I saw the film on VHS: the images of those towering, terrifying billboards adorned with ghastly, smiling faces burned into my impressionable young mind forever. Woefully misunderstood upon its 1982 release, Scott’s film has since found a devoted following: in fact, a sequel has recently been announced —it's to be directed by “Enemy" and "Prisoners" helmer Denis Villeneuve and with Harrison Ford confirmed to reprise his terrifically grizzled turn as. »

Helmer Ridley Scott has donated his collection of career memorabilia to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
The archive includes scripts, photographs, storyboards and host of other materials from his long career in film and TV, starting with his 1977 feature debut “The Duellists.”
“Ridley’s storied career is nearly unparalleled. He has traversed genres, and historical periods, mixed fantasy with biographical dramas, epics with small personal stories,” said USC Sca dean Elizabeth Daley. “There is no one like him, and his legacy of memorabilia will be kept close to our hearts for generations to come.”
