Chteau de Commarque. It's located in Dordogne between Sarlat and Les Eyzies, in the commune of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil.

Is this from a book?

Yes. The movie is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's short novel "The Duel".

The movie follows Conrad's novel quite closely; the main difference probably concerns Feraud's personality, which is painted in a somewhat more sinister light in the movie.

In the movie, D'Hubert tries to join Napoleon during his 100 days campaign (like Feraud does), but is stopped by his sister; in the movie, he simply refuses the offer. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Feraud is imprisoned and sentenced to execution; D'Hubert asks powerful politician Fouch to save him.

D'Hubert's action might have been caused by several factors. His sense of honor might have made him feel a connection with his old adversary. The book also implies D'Hubert feels somewhat ashamed not to have joined Napoleon while a brute like Feraud was coherent enough to do so.
