The film was released by AIP in the USA under the title 'The House by the Lake'. The distributors felt under that particular title it would be more marketable as Wes Craven's similarly-themed film The Last House on the Left (1972) had been such a hit. See more »

It's a great machine, isn't it?
When I cut into the super-charger I can get up to 140.
You can't keep it like that 'cause the fiction will melt the engine like a marshmellow. I never met a woman who was interested in cars more then you are.
I lived with a guy who was a former driver. For a while. It didn't work out, but he taught me a lot about cars. And I loved it. I really loved it.

None of what most people say about this film is true. This film is an A-movie masterpiece that has gone underrated for years. There is no rape or sleaziness, only unrelenting terror. The film, which follows a playboy dentist and his newly picked up model girlfriend on their way to a big beautiful country house by a lake. On their way, they run into some petty thugs who get mad at them for being so wise and smart with them. So they bash the couples weekend, terrorize the dentist, and beat up on the model (no rape is committed) and eventually kill the dentist. This leaves the model(Vaccaro) up to defending herself alone...and she does! This film had a creepy musical score that goes unknown and The leads, Stroud and Vaccaro are so believable and strong in their characters that the audience gets so caught up in it and as the film loses control, so will the audience. When movies like this are made, people automatically think that it will contain sleaziness and tons of gore. But this film keeps the gore on the low-low, and the sleaziness is nowhere to be seen. The acting from the supporting cast is equally fine, in being that none of the supporting cast really did anything else. The films star power is and always will be Brenda Vaccaro. She has the pressure on her shoulders to being this victim, and she does what no other actress has done in a film like this-she makes her character strong and fights back. When the leading thug(Stroud) tries to force himself upon her, she smacks and hits and plays it cool so, that it makes him stop. All thoughts and feelings of this film go outward as thus. A Great Movie! Vaccaro and Stroud rock! 8.6/10
