Women's prison movie based on true story including quite a few sensationalistic events
29 March 2017 | by (Santander Spain) – See all my reviews

This is a shocking tale of one inmate against cruel wardens . Esperanza Roy plays a woman incarcerated for swindle . In prison she meets a motley group of women and suffering rejection from some of them : murderers (Barbara Rey) , junkies (Beatriz Rossat) , thieves (Virginia Mataix) , prostitutes , among others . Esperanza Roy , then suffers humiliations , flagellation , beating , cruelty , degradation , and mistreats by the prison wardens . Meanwhile , her unsettling father commits suicide throwing himself a railway . Shortly after , Esperanza has a sexual attraction to Barbara Rey , and both of whom fall in love . There , then , she takes on a ruthless warden , Tota Alba . The movie arises a questions : Will she come out woman or wildcat? , is the coming out good or is the coming out to avenge the torments and terrors that make a jail for women a college for the crime? .

This ¨carne Apaleada¨ contains usual ingredients of the ¨WIP¨ sub-genre : violence , sadism , physical abuse , showers , lesbianism and lots of bare breasts and female frontal nudity . Based on a novel by Inés Palou incarcerated herself in a woman's prison . She then wrote a book about it , dealing with the authentic experiences of convicts at a gaol that it is a hell in earth , which was a kind of almanac of everything she witnessed while in prison ; soon after Javier Aguirre wrote the script . Esperanza Roy gives an acceptable but exaggerated acting . In fact , the picture obtained Cinema Writers Circle Awards, Spain 1978 , CEC , Award Best Actress : Esperanza Roy and others nominations . Support cast is pretty good , such as : Elisa Montes , Virginia Mataix , Enriqueta Carballeira , Yelena Samarina , Pilar Bardem , Trini Alonso , Julieta Serrano , Carmen De Lirio and Tota Alba as a cruel , sensation-angry nasty warden is magnificent .

The motion picture was regularly directed by Javier Aguirre and it has several flaws , gaps and failures . Javier Aguirre has filmed with all of the power and realism at its command but in exploitation style , including lesbian sex , female nudity and sex perversion . Father of director Arantxa Aguirre with first wife, actress Enriqueta Carballeira , being his second wife Esperanza Roy , both of whom play this film . Javier is a craftsman , expert on comedies such as : ¨El Astronauta¨, ¨Los Que Tocan El Piano¨ , ¨Locuras De Parchis¨ , ¨Los Chicos Con Las Chicas¨, ¨Soltero Y Padre En la Vida¨, ¨Soltera Y Madre En La Vida¨, ¨Rocky Carambola¨, ¨Martes Y Trece¨. Aguirre also made quite a few terror movies as ¨Gran Amor Conde Drácula¨, ¨Jorobado De La Morgue¨ , ¨Asesino Está En Sus Trece¨. In addition , he directed various ¨Avant Garde¨ films.

The film ¨carne Apaleada¨ belongs a popular genre ¨WIP¨ (Women In Prison) whose origin was ¨Caged¨ by John Farrow with Eleanor Parker followed by ¨Women's prison¨ with Ida Lupino and ¨House of Women¨ with Shirley Kight and it achieved a lot of successes in the 70, and 80s , such as : ¨Black mama , White mama¨ by Eddie Romero , ¨Chained heat¨ with Linda Blair , "Chained Heat II" by Lloyd A. Simandl with Briggite Nielsen , ¨Reform of School girls¨ by Tom DeSimone , "Jailbreakin' Women" by Michelle Massimo Tarantini , "Women's Prison Massacre" by Bruno Mattei , and Jess Frank films as : ¨99 women¨ with Mercedes McCambridge , ¨Women behind bars¨ with Lina Romay , ¨Woman from Jail Dep.No 9" with Karine Gambier , among others .
