Storyline
A shoot out after a robbery ends with the death of the Chief of Police. Police detective Ghini goes in search of a suspect, Lanza, to avenge the death of his boss. Ghini's search leads him to Belli, a Sicilian gangster and 'Trashy', the dirty leader of a gang of killers. "Destruction Force" is a late and amazing poliziottescho. It's the part written for Tomas Milian that distinguishes it. It is simply hilarious. The rest of the movie doesn't have much plot until we're well into it. Most of it has Merenda dealing with one crime incident after another, at his office, in chases and on the streets. As the story progresses, Merenda goes after a Mafia-type killer and jewel thief, but so does Milian because that man has killed one of his group.
The comedy has Milian delivering constant banter and routines in several very funny scenes. He has a restaurant in which insulting the patrons is part of the service. In another gag thread, he's hooked up with a fat wife and he has a baby boy. She's trying to make it in the movies and he's home cooking, and he talks to the baby with a stream of consciousness, venting all his feelings bar none. At one point, he's dickering over the phone for his woman's services in the movie. Then he rues the day he ever hooked up with her. The baby can't understand a word. Then he has a gang of would-be thieves and he humorously teaches them how to lift a watch, steal a wallet, play card tricks. The overall effect of Milian's character is a man who has insight into himself but is caught in life's tangles, has conflicting feelings, makes mistakes and is trying to make his way. He's a picture of everyman.
Merenda's detective has some humor in the office with his associates who are nowhere near as competent as he is, but mostly he's out chasing down one crime incident after another. There's quite a good chase involving buses. He will confront gangs single-handedly and get involved in shootouts. The action does not flag. Who needs plot? One cannot help but have a warm feeling toward this different kind of picture.
