It's almost two years since the passing of one of cinema's true wild men, Dennis Hopper. The actor, writer and director was a maverick titan of cinema, a man who starred in some of the most pictures of American cinema, from "Rebel Without A Cause" to "Blue Velvet," while also writing and directing a film that arguably changed the movies forever, "Easy Rider," while maintaining a personal life that was decidedly colorful (for full details, read Peter Biskind's modern classic "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls."
The actor was born 76 years ago today, and to pay tribute, we're republishing our look at the actor's ten greatest roles, which we originally ran shortly after his passing. Everyone has a favorite Hopper role, but some of his best performances came away from the beaten track: hopefully you'll find a little of both below. And let us know your own favorite turn from the actor in the comments section. »

Young filmmaker Colin Levy reached out to Martin Scorsese asking him for some film recommendations to further his cinematic education and Scorsese's assistant responded with the following list and a note that read: Mr. Scorsese asked that I send this your way. This should be a jump start to your film education! The list is comprised of 39 foreign films and I've gone through and put a little check mark next to those that I have personally seen, which, I guess, means I have 19 films I need to begin to explore. Of those I haven't seen, Rocco and His Brothers and Children of Paradise are two I've meant to watch for a long time. Rocco was one Francis Ford Coppola told me was one of his favorite films back when I interviewed him for Tetro and I've still yet to give it a watch. In 1985, German director Wim Wenders was prodded by his girlfriend to watch a performance of choreographer Pina Bausch's eerie Café Müller. As he recalls it now, he dreaded the evening that awaited, not knowing that what he was about to witness would change his movies and his life. Twenty-seven years later, the 66-year-old Wenders has earned his second Oscar nomination for helming Pina, a 3D documentary tribute to Bausch that features her company Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch performing some of her best known pieces. While Wenders had become her friend and admirer, Bausch sadly was unable to see the final film or even participate in the shooting because she died unexpectedly in 2009 at the age of 68. Nonetheless, she's helped Wenders, whose other films include classics like The American Friend, Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, gain some of the best reviews of his career. Chicago – Wim Wenders has entertained audiences for over 40 years with his wide range of film subjects, both in narrative and documentary form. His latest film is the delicate and emotionally charged ‘Pina,’ an overview and exposition of his friend, the famous German choreographer Pina Bausch.
Born in Düsselforf, Wenders came upon film after dropping out of university in the mid-1960s. After moving in Paris to try his hand as a painter and engraver, he became fascinated with film, seeing up to five a day at the local cinemas. He returned to Germany and enrolled in the University of Television and Film Munich, and became a film critic for several publications. He became part of the New German Cinema movement at the end of the 1960s, and made his feature directorial debut with “Summer in the City” (1970).

Patricia Highsmith is one of those novelists that filmmakers just can’t stop adapting: more than 25 of her thrillers have been thrown on to the screen, including The Talented Mr Ripley, The American Friend and Strangers On A Train. And her 1957 tome Deep Water has been in the works over at Fox 2000 for several years now, with Zach Helm the latest name attached to tackle scripting duties.Water focuses on a comfortable suburban couple whose marriage has become a stale blend of routine and joyless interaction. The husband hits on a plan to keep things interesting – he’ll let his wife have as many affairs as she wants. While it doesn’t sound like the sort of idea most marriage counsellors would recommend, it seems to work for a while. But then the various lovers start dying in mysterious circumstances…Back in 2009, Mike Nichols was set to direct, with Joe Penhall writing the script. »
