Neville Sutcliffe (John Inman) leaves the safety of his Blackpool fish and chip shop to take over his deceased father's seaside rock factory in Littlehampton with his step-sister Dorothy.
A very mediocre, probably more bad than good sitcom written by Vince Powell and starring John Inman in the midst of 'Are you Being Served'
Meet Neville Sutcliffe, owner of a Fish and Chip shop. In episode one, a solicitor came and told him he has inherited his Father's rock factory. He never really met his Father. He is to live with his step-sister who he has never met named Dorothy. The Foreman at the Rock Factory is Will. Working at the factory is lots of giggly factory girls. Looking after Neville's fish and chip shop is Bobby, a friend of Neville's. Though not overtly stated, it is quite clear Neville and Bobby have a gay relationship.
The scripts had innuendos that could be seen a mile off. Inman over-acted a lot even by his standards. Great stuff though from the fine Josephine Tewsom who played Dorothy and Peter Butterworth who played Wilf. I'm not criticising Powell and Inman though. Powell put some good lines in his scripts and Inman was as ever good fun. Big shame to see the fine actor die recently. It was 'Nearest and Dearest' revisited, a show also created by Vince Powell. And as ever Vince Powell used to reuse material from other shows he wrote and there is again evidence of this. The first three episodes are on youtube. Episode one is awful, but the other two episodes weren't bad at all, though not all together good. At the end of an episode, Inman would come on and say thanks for watching, hope to see you next week and god-bless. One gets the feeling this is a desperate plea. Mark Lewisohn included it on his list of all time worst sitcoms. I can see his point. Did manage a few laughs in it though. Only one series was made. How's your rock cock? Best Episode: Sink or Swim: Series 1 episode 3.
