Blu-ray Review: The Devil’S Rain (1975)

The poster tagline states, “Heaven help us all when The Devil’S Rain!”, and if that grammatical train wreck doesn’t break your brain, I promise you the following 86 minutes will. The Devil’s Rain (1975) is a glorious curiosity, a personal favorite, and thanks to Severin Films’ spectacular new Blu-ray release, one of the best reissues I’ve ever seen.

Meet The Prestons: Mark (William ShatnerKingdom of the Spiders), his mom (Ida LupinoJunior Bonner), and their ranch hand John (Woody ChamblissGargoyles) all await the return of Mark’s dad, and when he finally shows up, his eyes are missing and he starts melting in the rain (how bad is the humidity in the desert, anyway?). It turns out a fella by the name of Corbis (Ernest BorgnineDeadly Blessing) is looking for a very special book in the Preston family’s possession, a ledger of souls for

Pamela Adlon on 'Better Things,' Single Mom Guilt and Feeling 'Like a Dude'
"You want a glass of Burgundy?" Pamela Adlon asks, encouragingly, as she sits down in a ritzy Beverly Hills restaurant. The multi-hyphenate force behind FX's Better Things then gestures to her full face of makeup, which has been professionally applied for a photo shoot: "By the way, this is not me." She catches a glimpse of her smoky eyes in a nearby mirror, she yanks out a few fake lashes. When the beverages arrive in giant goblets that make the pours look a little stingy, she offers a polite thanks.

Walk of Fame Honoree Jeffrey Tambor on His Long Path From Stage to ‘Transparent’ Triumph

Walk of Fame Honoree Jeffrey Tambor on His Long Path From Stage to ‘Transparent’ Triumph
Long before his TV success, Jeffrey Tambor spent many years in repertory theater. Recalling those days, when he traveled around the country performing in cities such as Seattle, San Diego and Louisville, Tambor says, “There was an actor playing Casca in ‘Julius Caesar.’ He read my palm and I rolled my eyes, but he said [success] is going to happen but very late.”

The 73-year-old actor says he is “stunned and grateful and happy” about receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Aug. 8. He recalls a childhood visit to Los Angeles from San Francisco, where he grew up. “I remember my father, Bernard, took my brother Larry and I — I was 10 years old, if that — to Hollywood,” he says. “We did the thing where you put your handprints where Clark Gable’s were. So this is quite the circle, quite a moment for me.”

Tambor began acting on the small screen in 1977. He racked up

Drive-In Dust Offs: Psychic Killer (1975)

Revenge films have been around for a very long time; one can look to The Virgin Spring (1960), Straw Dogs (1971), or Death Wish (1974) for their rise from serious drama to movies of a more exploitive nature. Psychic Killer (1975) adds a unique twist to the tale by having astral projection as a means to the violent ends. Quirky and laden with creative deaths, it very much embraces its weirdness, providing a fun carpet ride for the whole family (at least according to its mind-boggling PG rating).

Released stateside in December by Avco Embassy Pictures, Psychic Killer, aka The Kirlian Force, only cost $250,000 and came and went like a phantom in the night. Critics paid it no mind either, and it was relegated to video store shelves and gas station rentals. On the surface, that’s understandable; a B cast with a former actor turned fairly unproven B director (Ray DantonDeathmaster), and

Take Me to the Pilots '17: Fox's 'La to Vegas'

[I'll remind you at the top of every single one of these: These entries are not reviews. They're gut reactions to not-for-air pilots that could change in big and small ways between now and September or October or midseason. Full reviews will come then. They'll be longer. And more carefully considered. The opinions may even change. Who knows?]

Show: La to Vegas (Fox) [Midseason]

The Pitch: "It's The Love Boat on a Crappy Regional Airline"

Quick Response: I'm skipping ahead to midseason here for two reasons: 1) Fox hasn't made its other new fall show (The Gifted) available...

Twin Peaks Recap: Becky's Got a Gun

Twin Peaks Recap: Becky's Got a Gun
A bumpy Twin Peaks this week. Surprise horror, painfully drawn out moments, and at least one big revelation: Bobby Briggs seems to be Becky’s father. And at some point Shelly and Bobby were married, as we now know that Shelly’s last name is Briggs (more on the state of that marriage in a moment). So yes, it would seem that I was wrong last week about Leo being Becky’s father (and perhaps wrong about Becky killing Leo). But I would like to remind you that Shelly is still wearing that mysterious ring on a chain around her
