The sometimes-comic, sometimes-dramatic exploits of the Bradford family--father Tom (a columnist for a Sacramento newspaper), mother Joan and their eight children: Mary, David, Joanie, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan, Tommy and Nicholas. After Joan's death, Tom met teacher Abby, and they were married to make the family feel complete again. didn't like the more comedic direction the show was heading in, he decided to honor his commitment to the show. However, the night the pilot aired he was involved in a serious auto accident where he sustained serious facial injuries and was forced to quit the show. Hamill has stated numerous times that the full extent of his injuries was only a broken nose. See more
