Storyline

"CHiPS," which stood for California Highway Patrol, followed the daily beats of two state motorcycle patrolmen as they patrolled the freeway system in and around Los Angeles. Officer Jon Baker was the straight, serious officer while Frank "Ponch" Poncherello was the more free- wheeling member of the duo; both reported to Sgt. Joe Getraer, who gave out assignments and advice in handling the cases. Each episode saw a compilation of incidents, ranging from the humorous (e.g., a stranded motorist) to criminal investigations (such as hijackings) and tragic incidents (such as a fiery multi-car pile-up with multiple deaths. Other aspects of Ponch and Jon's daily work were highlighted as well; the social lives of both officers (they were both single) often provided the lighter moments. On occassion, Ponch and Jon were assisted by a female "Chippie" at first, the very beautiful Sindy Cahill; and later, the more wholesome Bonnie Clark. In 1982, Ponch got a new partner, Bobby Nelson (series star... Written by Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>

Trivia

In one episode where Ponch and Jon were having issues with a paramedic, the engine company vehicle that the paramedic belonged was none other than fire house 51. Squad 51, the vehicle, was used exclusively by the series "Emergency". By then, that series had ended, however. "Chips" had no relationship to the Jack Webb spawned series. See more »

[Jon announces his proposal for a trail bike task force]
Officer Jon Baker: I'd like to nominate my partner, Frank Poncherello.
Officer Francis Llewellyn 'Ponch' Poncherello: Hey, that's great. 'Cause when we first met, I was on a dirtbike.
Officer Jon Baker: Uh, no, Ponch. When we first met, you had just fallen off a dirtbike.

User Reviews

No, it was good!
29 August 2004 | by (San Francisco) – See all my reviews

CHiPs was magical ... CHiPs was everything a young child wanted to see and much more ... it had great looking people, it had cop uniforms and cop cars, it had fast cars (hotrods), and yes it had Disco! What more could you want? Not to mention, you had Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada (who had become a 70's sex symbol). You just can't say anything bad about this show, because it was meant to entertain! Thats right ... it wasn't supposed to be a "stupid" reality show, like all we see today, it was meant to entertain and it did just that! I praise the producers for what they did with this ... because they made it huge and I still enjoy watching it today! There were many fine looking actresses then too and to quote a Hollywood exec. who once made the remark about Rock Hudson -- "They sure don't make them like that anymore"!
