Storyline

A gang of thieves plan a daring bank robbery, making their escape across the rooftops of Los Angeles. The police are quickly called in, however, and only one of the robbers, Murdock, makes a clean getaway. Unfortunately, in order to do so, he is forced to dump the stolen cash into a mailbox, which he then finds is locked until midnight, forcing him to wait until the mailman makes his late night pickup. As he waits, he discovers that his hiding place has been observed by several other people, all of whom want a share of the loot. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher <rocher@fiberbit.net>

Bo Svenson and Cybill Shepherd plot to steal mail box loaded with bank robbery loot
8 July 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Some day the work of director Paul Wendkos will receive wider recognition and "Special Delivery" (1976) will be known as a notable movie of his. In my television watching days, now long over, I used to regard his name on a film as a sign of quality viewing. In this film, there is excellent tension in action scenes and good human interactions in more character-oriented scenes. The writers were experienced. The music is the 70s Lalo Schifrin treatment. The cinematography is by the expert Harry Stradling, Jr. The acting is crisp, interesting and convincing.

Bo Svenson plays a Vietnam vet who robs a bank with 3 other vets. That entire sequence including the escape is masterful. Svenson, chased by police, hides his loot in a mailbox. He's seen by Cybill Shepherd who makes a point of roping him in to her nearby apartment where they begin a tentative collaboration, the idea being to recover the loot somehow before the next mail pickup. She shows her mettle by fending off some local delinquents on motorcycles and from having left her boring husband. Neither knows that a local drug dealing and drug taking bartender, Michael C. Gwynne, also saw Svenson stash the money ($500,000). Gwynne owes money to the ever-reliable heavy, Vic Tayback and tells him he has a big score coming. Tayback's smart boss, Robert Ito, sniffs out the possibilities and has Gwynne followed. There is bound to be a collision over this mailbox.

This movie is a neo-noir of the 70s variety. The hero is a bank robber whom we are rooting for against even worse bad guys who are into drugs or who try to rape Shepherd. At times, the story mixes humor with the seriousness, another trait often seen in neo-noir. The policeman on the beat is somewhat suspicious of him but he eludes interrogation. Police are secondary to the story except for their initial pursuit of the robbers. The movie overall has a light touch, something like a caper film.
