- Student in full success, the young Paolo Passeri (Michele Placido) is firmly anti-militarist. But he must do his military service and wants to be reformed without ever succeeding. Once incorporated into the army, he tries by all means to be recalcitrant. His chief, Captain Asciutto (Franco Nero) detects his behavior and his NCOs quickly spotted this strong rebel, inflict the worst chores when they humiliate him in front of the whole regiment. One night, Asciutto provokes the undisciplined soldier in his office and forces him to fight. Traumatized and collapsed, Paolo reviews his behavior. He shows an ability of obedience, even denounces his comrades and manages to get closer to Captain Asciutto, who offers him to watch his young and pretty wife, Rosana (Miou-Miou). The helpless and sadistic husband is despised by his kleptomaniac wife. Abused, brutalized and lacking in love, the young woman is desperate to get out of this evil trap. Rosana is cheating on him with a sexual outraged lieutenant, Baio (Patrick Dewaere). Paolo is touched by this young woman who offers to run away with her. But the violence that reigns in this small universe will lead to a bitter drama. During this escape attempt, captain Asciutto is shot down by a sentry. This gunman had been unjustly punished for him. The false testimony of his compatriot Paolo Passeri saves him from the court martial. The film, entirely shot in Italy, allows to discover the architecture of the region of Rome, its barracks, its villas and the furniture of a period of post-war period.
