Angry cop John Saxon is out to get a killer and instead encounters Lee J. Cobb

"Cross Shot" as it has been retitled is a typical poliziottescho.

This movie highlights location shooting in Apulia, the heel of Italy and a region on the coast. It was nice to see the different architecture, colors, streets and landmarks, such as Castel del Monte.

John Saxon is the angry cop who feels hamstrung. He slaps around bad guys when he takes them in. His immediate cause of anger is that a policeman has been killed when a gang of 4 young hoods attempted to rob an armored car. All but one has been dealt with and he escaped. During his escape he stole a car that belonged to the local mafia chief's right-hand man. The chief is Lee J. Cobb. He scowls a lot and is unhappy with his henchmen. But being old and blind, he doesn't seem too anxious to do much about it. In the car was a briefcase with some sensitive letters involving Cobb in high-level graft with a politician. So the young killer (Lino Capolicchio) is being pursued by both police and Cobb's inept men.

Saxon is also very disturbed by the local newspaper which seems to be against police and for procedural safeguards to the accused. The editor, Renzo Palmer, has a pretty big part and he's doing detective work too. In fact, he angers Saxon when he manages to publish a photo of the accused.

The accused youth is presented as a confused and not very bright guy with a girl friend who helps him. In the heat of the robbery when he was fired upon, he returned the fire with a machine gun under the urging of his buddies. I say he's not too bright because at one point he tries to do a deal with Cobb that leads directly to an attempt on his life. Then he does an amazing thing. He hands the briefcase to his girl friend and tells her to run. Doesn't he realize that endangers her life greatly?

Eventually everyone's paths manage to cross as the story reaches its climaxes. The IMDb rating of 6.4 is about right for this one. The low ratings of the reviewers preceding me (in the 3 range) are way too low. They were disappointed at the lack of action. It has enough action, though.
