if you didn't rent this at some seedy VHS place as a kid, you probably won't like this as much as I do

This one gets trashed for two reasons: 1: it's advertised as a Jackie Chan movie while he gets very little screen time in a rare villain role, and 2: Lo Wei's reputation has been somewhat disgraced by all the triad dirt, regardless of his skills as a director. Yeah, this film (like all his post-Bruce Lee stuff) is trash, but a lot of these movies were trash. That's part of the fun.

On its own terms, this is a great so-bad-it's-good kung-fu flick filled with hilarious dubbing, lots of blood and surprisingly pretty locations. The plot is a pathetic mess, but to be honest, the same is true for most films with wuxia leanings.

The confusion starts in the first scene. A bunch of minor characters who are barely referred to again throughout the entire movie spend 5~ minutes stealing some jewel and fighting over it. Cut to Jimmy Wang Yu relaxing in a forest as various thugs worship him and cut off their own fingers in sacrifice. Basically, Wang Yu's character is some kind of self-proclaimed deity who extorts criminals for a living. This guy's the protagonist? Chalk it up to cultural differences, or...? What follows is a bunch of totally nonsensical plot twists, over-the-top violence (including people melting) and gratuitous sexism. A lot of fun.
