Bernard Fresson pursues and harasses Jean-Louis Trintignant and step-son on the road to France
17 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I watched a full screen print titles "The Intruder". It was dubbed quite well but I'd still like to hear it in the original tongue. The print was on the muddy and dark side. This good suspense thriller should be restored and re-released.

The movie picks up steam as it proceeds and really gets going in the second half. Jean-Louis Trintignant picks up his step-son, Richard Constantini, from a boarding school in Italy and they plan to drive together to Paris, where Trintignant's new wife, Mireille Darc, lives. They are pursued and harassed on the way by a secretive man, Bernard Fresson, who doesn't show himself. The early part of the story develops the new relationship between Trintignant and the bright Constantini, who first notices they are being followed.

When Fresson really starts to act up, the police get into the act, headed by Adolfo Celi, but they are shown to be pretty much useless and following their own agenda. For one reason and another, Trintignant and son are on their own.

While it's a bit contrived, it works. Fresson was the policeman in "French Connection II". He was a very experienced actor. This movie relies heavily on his playing the psychopath and he definitely delivers. His performance is understated and yet his psychosis comes out at times in a very threatening and effective way. Trintignant gives one of his typical performances, which feature a surface cool and rather mysterious, self-contained person who is intelligent and emotional, but controls and hides the emotionality. Darc is seen through telephone calls until near the end. She adds a good balancing and smoldering feminine side. There is one interaction between Fresson and a waitress that adds another worthy scene from the feminine side.

One hair-raising chase scene along narrow mountainous roads is expertly filmed and worth the price of admission. The editing changes points of view and camera angles that really spice this up.

Recommended.
