A strange outing, but not as bad as some suggest
29 May 2008 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I watched this with my head full of the bad reviews and also somewhat tired. Its a credit to the film that I didn't fall asleep and was even competently entertained at times. Unfortunately, this is also a deeply flawed movie. Firstly, I don't know if I just saw a lousy print, but some moments were much too dark, taking away from the experience. Also the script was very messy, going from one story to another linked only by the killer with no other connection with the characters that I could tell. Furthermore the pacing was fairly slow and the film was hindered by a somewhat glaring lack of blood. However, The Demon, though a bad film, was not devoid of good points. For one, the cast all seemed to perform fairly competently, with Cameron Mitchell's amusingly wacko turn standing out and the various women, both pretty and convincing. The demon was an excellent villain at times, cold and brutal, leading to some reasonable suspense and the odd fun kill. His preferred method is bloodless but at least original and he pops up enough during the film to keep a nice strange atmosphere going. There's some fair gratuitous nudity including a tense topless chase sequence. The ending is good stuff too, though a little strange. Altogether, though this was pretty inept as a film owing to a thorough lack of explanation, coherence and general sense, combined with the slow pace, neglect of gore and general lack of purpose. For a slasher style affair the characterisation is better than usual but this doesn't help when the film as a whole inspires bafflement. Taken as the sum of its good parts, this film is pretty interesting, but it just doesn't gel well enough together. Caution advised.
