In 1918 a defeated Austro-Hungarian Baron Colonel Von Görtz returns home to Transylvania which has just been lost to Romania. A vengeful Von Görtz punishes the nearby villagers but Romanian Major Tudor Andrei aids them.
Three young people are speeding through rain in a borrowed car. A first accident of a little girl give the sign of a race through the city trying to escape from the police. The race ends tragically, with another grave accident, the victim here being one of them. The only hope to survive is to run.
