Burt Lancaster on TCM: The Leopard, A Child Is Waiting, Seven Days In May

25 August 2011 5:33 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Claudia Cardinale, Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, The Leopard Burt Lancaster is Turner Classic Movies' "Summer Under the Stars" featured star today, August 25. TCM is presenting 11 Burt Lancaster movies, including two premieres: The Leopard and Scorpio. [Burt Lancaster Movie Schedule.] A powerful but hammy leading man who developed into a first-rate mature actor-star in movies such as Luchino Visconti's Conversation Piece and Louis Malle's Atlantic City, Lancaster had a long, eclectic, and prestigious career both in Hollywood and abroad. Imagine Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Clark Gable, or John Wayne working with Visconti and Malle, not to mention Bernardo Bertolucci (Novecento / 1900), John Cassavetes (A Child Is Waiting), and Bill Forsyth (Local Hero). TCM is now showing Cassavetes' A Child Is Waiting (1963), quite possibly the director's most accessible — i.e., commercial — effort. Produced by Stanley Kramer, a filmmaker with a strong (at times overly so) sense of (liberal) social commitment, and directed by »

Mammuth – review

4 June 2011 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

In Benoît Delépine and Gustave de Kervern's black comedy Aaltra, a pair of mutually hostile paraplegics set out in their wheelchairs from Belgium to Finland to seek compensation from the manufacturers of the harvester that maimed them. Their new film, Mammuth, is also a quirky road movie, in this case about Serge (Gérard Depardieu), a recently retired French butcher in a small-town meatpacking plant. He has to drive around south-western France on his old Mammuth motorbike to gather documents from all his past employers in order to claim his state pension. Depardieu, now the size of a beached whale, exudes sadness as he meets a succession of fellow eccentrics while pursuing his hopeless task. The earlier film was in elegant black-and-white; this one is in grainy, almost granulated, colour and is intermittently very funny. In one bizarre scene (reminiscent of a similar moment between Depardieu and Robert De Niro »

Cannes 2011. Here we go

11 May 2011 2:20 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Updated.

Monitoring @thedailyMUBI, I find it fascinating to see which news items, long reads or quick diversions become, for lack of a handier word, "hits," spreading via retweets like wildfire through the Twitterverse. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw scored one yesterday with his list of Palme d'Or winners over the past decade, to which he adds "the name of the film that I think should have won" and his "'Palme of Palme' award: the best Palme d'Or winner in the new century." To anyone with an eye on Un Certain Regard: you'll want to check this list as a guide to Bradshaw's tastes — he's a member of the jury, presided over by Emir Kusturica.

Also in the Guardian: "At last year's Cannes film festival, there was an outcry," writes Charlotte Higgins: "there was not a single woman in competition for the Palme d'Or. British director Alicia Duffy screened her debut feature in the Directors' Fortnight strand, »

A Honorary Palme to Bernardo Bertolucci at Cannes Film Festival 2011

12 April 2011 3:52 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

The 64th Cannes Film Festival is coming, and we’re here to report that, during the Opening Ceremony on 11 May, the organizers will award an annual Honorary Palme d’Or to the legendary Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci. This recognition is attributed to an important filmmaker, whose work is authoritative but, believe it or not, never got a Palme d’Or.

In the recent past, Woody Allen, in 2002, or Clint Eastwood in 2009, were awarded this distinction by President Gilles Jacob, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Festival de Cannes.

Now, the act becomes tradition and will be annual, taking place at the opening of the event. 2011 is finally the year when Bertolucci will receive this honor, and we’re definitely glad to hear that!

The filmmaker (poet Attilio Bertolucci’s son) has marked Italian cinema with intimate masterpieces as well as monumental frescoes: from Prima della Revoluzione (1964) to »

This is a novelty for the Festival de Cannes: from 2011, the organizers will award an annual Honorary Palme d’or, which will be presented during the Opening Ceremony.

The 64th Cannes Film Festival will award its 2011 Honorary Palme d'Or award to Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, whose films include Prima della Revoluzione (1964), Novecento (1976), The Conformist (1970), The Last Emperor (1987), Stealing Beauty (1996) (which elicited boos and flapping chairs when it and young Liv Tyler debuted at Cannes) and The Dreamers (2003, pictured with Bertolucci). Bertolucci joins the likes of Woody Allen and Clint Eastwood, who have both received the award within the past decade. Cannes's Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux state: "The quality of his work, which appears today in all its uniqueness and the extent of which we receive every day intact, the strength of his commitment to cinema and the ties that bind make this for Cannes the first legitimate recipient." They will present the award to Bertolucci during the Cannes Opening Ceremony on May 11. »
