Storyline

TV series of British/German origin, and set in the "present" Earth of the 1970s. A planet from another solar system drifts into Earth's system and is detected by some Earth scientists who investigate. The surface of this planet is no longer habitable and the residents have moved to a high-tech underground city. The society is ruled by the women, who of course, are all beautiful. Men are considered mentally inferior and are divided into two categories: the "adequately intelligent" who are selected by women to act as their personal "domestics" for household chores, and the remainder who are forced to perform menial labor under the supervision of female guards. The guards are attired nicely in visored helmets, boots, hot pants, and elbow-length gloves which are used to control the men through some sort of apparent force. Scientists from Earth (one men and one woman) find their way to the planet, and are forced to take their stated places in society. The man is chosen as a domestic, ... Written by Robert L. When British TV had but 3 channels......
17 February 2010 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

It's Sunday morning at 11:30am sometime in the late 1970's (i'm gonna guess 1977!). On BBC1 was Songs of Praise, or summink similar in the GodSpot: on BBC2 is the Open University, not quite 8 years old. On ITV at noon is an hour of Weekend World with Peter Jay, followed by the holy grail of kids TV, Thunderbirds.. Just finished is Out of Town, Jack Hargreaves whittling some wood & talking "out in the sticks". Or maybe an Interlude, like the Potters Wheel, or maybe the painting one.

Sandwiched in between these is Star Maidens. Sexual Equality's nemesis. think Miss UK in space with Star Trek aspirations & your not far off...

Forget the hackneyed plot, the "not too shabby" effects & the "I went to RADA" cast.

Absolutely forgettable, but i can still recall the theme tune, SM is a bit of a curate's egg. Not accessible enough to be mainstream but not memorable enough to be a classic. It sits in the "Cult TV" niche, waiting for all this silly "Womens Lib" nonsense to finish, so it can have another go.

And fail.

Again....
