Looking back at The Avengers

Alex pays a fond return revisit to 1960s classic TV series, The Avengers...

Stylish crime fighting, despicable evil masterminds, a bowler-hatted old Etonian gentleman spy and a series of beautiful leather cat-suited, kinky-booted, no-nonsense heroines. The Avengers had all this and more. What began as a monochrome tape series in January 1961 ran the whole of the Sixties, becoming a colourful slice of period hokum, full of flair, wit and sophistication, yet with its tongue firmly in its cheek.

Always the perfect gentleman, John Steed was played by Patrick Macnee. Originally billed second to the late Ian Hendry, Macnee was still playing Steed over 15 years later when he was teamed with the youthful duo of Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt for The New Avengers in 1976. In the 1998 film, the role of Steed was given to Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman played Emma Peel. I will say no more about the film. »

Restoration & Archive: a clean slate

Opportunities are opening up to restore classic assets on new formats - but film restoration is an art form in danger. Ann-Marie Corvin reports from Screen International and Broadcast’s Restoration & Archive Forum

“If there’s been a gold rush in film archive then it’s kind of passed me by,” says Paul Collard, vice-president of film and digital services at film processing company Deluxe Digital.

While there have been a few showcase renewals in the Us, such as Sony’s 4K restoration of David Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence Of Arabia, the main drivers for restoration of archive in Europe are commercial - the Blu-ray sell-through market and broadcasters looking to release TV classics on new distribution formats - or cultural, from national institutions and trusts that find the money to achieve a handful of significant projects.

Deluxe, for example, recently completed full Digital Intermediates (Di) restoration of the 1927 silent film The Battles Of The Coronel And Falkland »

Ever dreamed of being recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D.?  The new Avengers exhibition at Discovery Times Square is probably the closest you’ll get.  Marvel Entertainment teamed up with Victory Hill Exhibitions to create Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network), an immersive and interactive experience that explores the science behind the Avengers and tests whether or not you yourself have what it takes to be an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The computer systems weren’t fully functional during our visit, but we did get the opportunity to check out the slew of case files, weapons and suits on display, and test out select operational stations including the Captain America grip strength test, Hulk DNA gamma radiation reader and more.  When the exhibit is completely up and running, guests will receive cards with scan codes, »
