Lawyer Adam West attempts to bring down the local power, John Anderson
11 May 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Specialist" (1975) is definitely a neo-noir, as noted by critic John Grant. It doesn't reveal its nature at first, seeming more a trite story of crime and comedy. This is due to an early focus on the character played by Harvey Jason, the artist son of a local potentate, John Anderson. It is also due to the out of tune character played by Adam West and certain early encounters that satirize his green outlook. However, the story gets more and more serious as it proceeds, ultimately providing as noir an ending as can be.

The directing of Howard Avedis has not, in my opinion, brought out the best in his cast. There are just too many instances where the lines don't come out convincing or have a strange intonation or carry too much attempt at humor that doesn't fly. The tone of the movie is too uneven. The movie comes across as being on the strange and awkward side.

West wants to bring Anderson down a few notches and loosen his grip over the county. Anderson hatches a plot to discredit West using a woman to seduce him, Ahna Capri. This leads to big trouble for West but he fights back gamely with the support of his wife, Marlene Schmidt.

Being a noir fan, I didn't find it hard to stay engaged with this movie. But it's not really up to par.
