Celebrate Halloween Bolly-ish style

30 October 2016 6:31 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

October 31st is Halloween, when kids (of all ages) dress up to go trick-or-treating. Then, of course, there are the cool adults getting in on the costume fun to go to Halloween parties. Since we are all Bollywood buffs, okay fanatics, we thought it would be fun to poll our writers to see who they would love to dress up if we had a Bollywood Halloween – Bollyween Ball. Boy oh boy were we flooded with amazing and inventive ideas.

Some of these costumes you could probably put together easily. However, some might need extra help from family, tailors, costume designers, stylists, costume engineers and even Oscar winning makeup artist Greg Canoom (transformed Srk in Fan and Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire)!!

Check out how the excellent team of BollySpice would celebrate Halloween Bolly-ish style.

Dishoom Movie Review

29 July 2016 7:00 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

I don’t know about you, but I for one have been eagerly waiting for buddy-cop films to come back into the limelight. Having grown up on the likes of Sholay, Main Anari Tu Khiladi and Munna Bhai, I could not have been more psyched to hear that the promising director who delivered a very hilarious Desi Boyz in 2011 is all set to regenerate this genre. Rohit Dhawan’s latest outing, Dishoom, claimed to be riding high on the 90s buddy-cop film nostalgia and promised to be an action-comedy entertainer that is not to be missed. But does it really end up doing all these things?

Yes and no. For starters he delivered the action he promised. In fact it seems at one point that the older Dhawan brother had set out to give another fellow Rohit a run for his money as the movie delivered one interesting car chase after another. »

“Sarbjit is a Gem” – Subhash K Jha reviews Sarbjit

20 May 2016 5:13 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Seeing some of the scathing reviews for Sarbjit I was tempted to fish out the early reviews of a film released in 1975 which was condemned by critics for being “loud” , “brash”, “plotless” and “over-dramatic”.

That film was Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay.

Sarjbit is no Sholay. Thankfully. But I firmly believe its forceful message on prisoners of politics and its persuasive emotional velocity in the scenes showing the imprisoned man’s sister’s and wife’s suffering, would be acknowledged in retrospect as remnants of a truly remarkable cinematic achievement.

The sister is played by the helplessly beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who rises valiantly to confront and embrace the sister Dalbir’s anguished and defiant fight to the end to free her brother. This is Dalbir’s story, more than Sarbjit’s. And yet it’s also a film that doesn’t spare us Sarbjit’s anguish.

Sarbjit is not a film that holds itself back. »

Bollywood’s new year is set to begin with the intensity of the unusual and power packed casting of superstar Amitabh Bachchan with the multi-faceted Farhan Akhtar in Wazir. This first release of the year, directed by Bijoy Nambiar, is also a talk of the town with one of the most melodious romantic songs of recent times Tere Bin. Not only this, the film will see Amitabh Bachchan playing a paralysed chess grandmaster with a very unusual look.

Given its storyline and the powerful trailer, with music to match, it is believed that Wazir will interest teenagers and young adults.
