The boisterous and entertaining new Bollywood buddy-gangster melodrama “Gunday” is set mostly in the 1980s, and in its plot and characters it harks back strongly to the anti-heroic, still-beloved Amitabh Bachchan blockbusters of that period. Even its title treatment is intended to spark nostalgia, typographically evoking the classic 1975 Bachchan vehicle “Sholay.” Indeed, the film’s production company, Yash Raj Films, and its exuberantly gifted young writer-director, Ali Abbas Zafar (2011′s “My Brother’s Bride”), seem to be positioning the film as the culmination of a recent trend toward old-fashioned dal-and-roti (meat-and-potatoes) actioners, as exemplified by the recent likes of “R. Rajkumar,” “Bullet Raja” and, worst of all, the Salman Khan headbanger “Jai Ho.” It’s off to a good start with nearly $5 million in its first two days.
The storyline is the element that owes the most to the macho masala pictures of the 1980s, centering as it does upon »

Turns out Indians were not all that interested in “Sholay 3D” as the box office after four days in Indian theaters reached 63 million rupees ($1.01 million) from 1,000 screens.
Theaters were at 60%-70% capacity, according to exhibitors. Although the Amitabh Bachchan-Dharmendra starrer beat the other new release “Mr. Joe B. Carvalho” at the box office, the 3D conversion cost the producers $3.5 million.
“Dhoom 3,” with Aamir Khan, is still going gangbusters in theaters at 90% capacity, according to exhibs, and may be drawing all the oxygen.
The re-release of the 1975 blockbuster “Sholay” had the support of its stars, who include Bachchan and Dharmendra’s respective wives, Jaya Bhaduri and Hema Malini. Sanjeev Kumar, the other lead in the all-star cast, died in 1985. But the film’s director Ramesh Sippy went to court to regain copyright to the film, which is now with his nephew, however the Mumbai High Court rejected his plea »

An inviolable classic, timeless, as it is timely. The new version, spruced up with flying bullets and thundering hoofs, comes to us at a time when "Dhoom" is trending. So it's "Sholay 3D" weighed against "Dhoom: 3".
Undoubtedly, the current films that seem to make so much money seem to pale into flamboyant insignificance when weighed against the hefty impact of "Sholay".

Both the releases of the week, the Arshad-Soha starrer, Mr. Joe B. Caravlaho and Gp Sippy's timeless classic Sholay 3D, failed to cut much ice with the audience. Carvalho. From the two releases, it is the 3D version of Sholay which is expected to show an improvement in collections as »
