Norman Jewison Will Get DGA Lifetime Achievement Award

2 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Norman Jewison, the Oscar-nominated director of In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, and Moonstruck will add another line to his resume on Jan. 30, when the Directors Guild of America gives him its lifetime achievement award. It's a fairly exclusive honor, too -- the DGA has been around for 73 years but only gives lifetime achievement awards occasionally. Jewison is the 33rd recipient; the last one was Clint Eastwood, in 2006.

Jewison, an 83-year-old Toronto native, is a somewhat unusual choice for the DGA in that he hasn't been active lately. The most recent recipients -- Eastwood, Mike Nichols, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola -- had all been working pretty regularly at the time of their awards, but Jewison has only made three theatrical features in the last 15 years: Bogus (1996), The Hurricane (1999), and The Statement (2003).

His past work is exemplary, though. In addition to the films I mentioned, »

Sound On Sight Radio #158 - Whip It!

6 October 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Attention pre-teen girls with dreams of growing up to star in an energy drink commercial or an ad for Alesse: this is the show for you. Tonight, Sound on Sight takes a look at roller derby, which is the most hard-core, extreme form of teenage girl rebellion since Sporty Spice got a nose ring. Tattoos, body-checking, mild language: they’re all here, as we review Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, as well as Kansas City Bomber, the 1972 Raquel Welch version. We’ll also take a look at 1975’s Rollerball, director Norman Jewison’s futuristic male variant. listen now [1] Listen now! 10 Things I Learned This Week

2 October 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Michael Adams

1. The History of Roller Movies Goes Way Beyond “Whip It

From James Caan skating for his life in “Rollerball” to Raquel Welch doing similar knock ‘em down duties in “Kansas City Bomber,” movies about people on eight wheels have a rich and varied history. Charlie Chaplin got his skates on not only in “Modern Times” but also 20 years earlier in “The Rink” while Missy Piggy took out a mugger on borrowed wheels in “Muppets Take Manhattan.” And there are many, many more. The Ten Greatest Future Sports from Movies

1 October 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

After an advance screening of Drew Barrymore's rollicking, entertaining, and heartfelt Whip It, which opens tomorrow, some real-life roller derby players were asked about the movie's realism. (Ellen Page plays a teenage beauty pageant contestant who gets involved in the sport.) They all chimed in: "We don't get to give anyone bloody noses!"

Yes, sports movies based loosely on real life and set in the modern era tend to take liberties with the levels of violence involved in their sport. But sci-fi movies tend to ratchet up the bloody-nosed action to incredible levels, taking murder for granted. Life is cheap in the future, I suppose. With images of Ellen Page in roller skates and a faux-Girl Scout uniform in mind, not to mention the thought of Drew Barrymore herself with a bloody nose, I set off in search of the very best future sports movies -- and discovered that »

Review: Did You Ever See... The Running Man?

3 September 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Gamer is released this week, written and directed by Crank’s Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. It features an online game where death row convicts are taken control of by players via mind control, and forced to fight to the death. Gerard Butler (300) stars.

Violent sports as entertainment are not new to cinema. In 1975, Norman Jewison’s future-set dystopia saw James Caan as a veteran of Rollerball, a violent roller derby-type sport that was used to entertain the masses. In the same year, Death Race, directed by Paul Barker and starring David Carradine, featured a coast-to-coast car race where the competitors were awarded extra points for killing pedestrians.

The most obvious parallel, though, was made in 1987 and starred the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yeah, I know you’ve all seen it. So I’ll see you on the other side, with a more light-hearted look at The Running Man. »
