Downbeat and Violent Neo-Noir
11 June 2002 | by (Out there in the dark) – See all my reviews

Downbeat and grim, "The Nickel Ride" concerns itself with a crime boss who is losing his grip. As in "Point Blank", there is some occasional confusion of imagination/dream/reality. The film has a consistent feel of characterizations and dramatic thrust. A good deal of interest is found in the numerous LA locations used by director Robert Mulligan. But there is no attempt made to glamorize the rather chilly world that is so convincingly presented. The movie was filmed in 35mm Panavision and Mulligan utilizes the full capacity of the wide screen. David Grusin's occasionally discordant score is an asset as well

"The Nickel Ride" opened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974 and was nominated for the Palme d'Or that year. Coppola's "The Conversation" also screened at the festival that year, and Mulligan's film shares with it some neo-noir, Los Angeles existential angst.

The late Jason Miller, who had recently made an impression in "The Exorcist", brings a good deal of conviction to the world-weary lead and he is well supported, particularly by Bo Hopkins, as a grinning, urban cowboy-style hitman. Also on hand is Tuesday Weld-look-alike Linda Haynes.

Recommendable for its sustained, downbeat atmosphere
