Supernatural: Who (or What) Could Dean Meet in Purgatory?

Supernatural: Who (or What) Could Dean Meet in Purgatory?

Purgatory is my new Supernatural obsession.  After posting an article yesterday about why Dean's situation in Purgatory will be vastly different from his trip to Hell, discussion inevitably came up as to who Dean could meet in Purgatory.

Since the season 7 finale, I've seen various suggestions on which characters could be re-introduced by putting them in Purgatory.  Here's a few of the suggestions: deceased angels, past monsters or species of creatures that have been killed, and souls who refused to go with their Reapers, such as Bobby, John and Mary.

For me, only one of these options is viable, given what we know about Purgatory in the Supernatural context.  Let me tell you why, and explain why Supernatural's version of Purgatory is different from ours.

The Dark Knight Rises: Record IMAX Footage

26 April 2012 5:27 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Christian Bale, The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight Rises will have more IMAX footage than any other Hollywood movie in history. As per a Wall Street Journal report, Christopher Nolan’s third and last installment in his Batman trilogy will offer more than one hour of scenes filmed with those cumbersome IMAX cameras. For comparison’s sake, The Dark Knight, the biggest 2008 blockbuster at the domestic box office, had 40 minutes of IMAX footage. But what’s the big IMAX deal? After all, movies such as Tim Burton / Johnny Depp / Mia Wasikowska’s Alice in Wonderland, James Cameron / Sam Worthington’s Avatar, Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson’s The Hunger Games, and Bill Condon / Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 were all shown on IMAX screens. And upcoming IMAX releases include Joss Whedon / Chris Evans / Chris Hemsworth’s The Avengers, Ridley Scott / Noomi Rapace / Michael Fassbender’s Prometheus, »

The Dark Knight Rises, Spider-man Trailers: The Avengers

25 April 2012 4:04 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises got a nice plug when six minutes of footage premiered before IMAX screenings of Paramount’s Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. (One could also say that MI4 got a boost from the Tdkr footage as well.) On May 4, The Dark Knight Rises trailer 3 will premiere before screenings of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, a Marvel production to be released by Walt Disney Studios. But Batman is a DC comics character, how could that be? Well, good business sense. That’s it. And remember, as MTV.com explains, back in 2008 The Dark Knight trailer was shown before Marvel’s Iron Man. And it gets better for fanboys, fangirls, and fanseniors: the new The Amazing Spider-Man trailer will also be screened before The Avengers. The rebooted Spider-Man has been much less buzzed about than either The Avengers, which »

The Dark Knight Rises: CinemaCon Thunderous Applause

24 April 2012 9:43 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Christian Bale, The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight Rises was a hit at CinemaCon on Tuesday. According to TheWrap’s Brent Lang, Tdkr director / co-writer Christopher Nolan "spliced together a nearly wordless series of shots that showed the caped crusader (Christian Bale) duking it out with Bane (Tom Hardy), tangling with a very sultry Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and once again being called on to save Gotham City from the brink of anarchy." Lang adds that "the applause that greeted the footage was thunderous, so much so that Warner Bros. might think about using it as a trailer." EW.com offers a few more details about the Dark Knight Rises footage, including the following: The clips began with an extended scene of Bane … and his crew hijacking a plane in an innovative way. Then it cuts to a series of shots showing Christian Bale as an aging — and perhaps ailing — Batman. »

Can Cannes keep on top?

Cannes, which has announced its 2012 line-up, has some serious competition. As Tribeca begins and ahead of Sundance London, our critics examine the big hitters on the film festival circuit

It has been a quiet few months on the film festival front. The last two biggies, Sundance and Berlin, were back in the depths of winter; but now things are suddenly getting interesting. Tribeca, the New York trendoid-magnet, has just started, and Cannes, the swanky Cote d'Azur schmoozathon, has reared its finely contoured head on the horizon. The UK is even getting in on the action, with the much-anticipated arrival next week of Sundance London, an offshoot of Robert Redford's indie-maven event in Park City, Utah.

Sundance London is an example of that industry buzzword "diffusion", whereby name events set up franchises overseas. Tribeca has been doing it since 2009 in Qatar, co-organising the Doha film festival. It's a byproduct of »

Liza Minnelli, Kim Novak, Robert Wagner, Tippi Hedren and Debbie Reynolds in person. Black Narcissus, Vertigo, Cabaret, and The Fountainhead projected on gigantic screens at Grauman's Chinese and Egyptian Theatres. Could any classic film fan wish for more? You could. And, at this year's annual TCM Classic Film Festival, which takes place from April 12th through the 15th, you'd get more: Kirk Douglas, Stanley Donen, Angie Dickenson, Norman Lloyd, Rhonda Fleming, and Norman Jewison appearing at special events and screenings of Two for the Road, Chinatown, Casablanca, The Longest Day, and The Thomas Crown Affair. But before going on about this year's festival, a look back is essential.

Supernatural Spoilers: When Will Castiel Return? And Will the Winchesters Face Angels Again?

Supernatural Spoilers: When Will Castiel Return? And Will the Winchesters Face Angels Again?

One of our favorite Supernatural angels was last spotted in episode 7.17.  After Sam had a breakdown and was committed to a mental hospital, Dean went in search for a true healer that could fix his brother.  What he found was a man named Emmanuel, who was actually an amnesiac Castiel.  Dean brought his old pal back to save Sam, but didn't want to reveal his true identity until they were faced with a group of demons they couldn't get past.

Castiel did manage to smite the hell out of the demons and remembered everything, including the sins he had committed in an effort to defeat Raphael.  Later, he was unable to heal Sam, as the wall in his head was simply too crumbled to piece back together.  Feeling horribly guilty for having put Sam in this position, »

Meet the 2012 Tribeca Filmmakers #11: 'While We Were Here' Director Kat Coiro

7 April 2012 9:23 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Only hours after the birth of their daughter in a one-room apartment in Little Italy, New York, Kat Coiro's parents took her down to the street to celebrate the Feast of San Gennaro seen in "The Godfather", Parts II and III. As a child, Kat Coiro traveled all of the world with her parents as part of a "gypsy-like" existence. Her adventures included living with Haitian refugees in Key Largo, staying in an American millionaire's villa in Italy, crossing the heavily armed border to Yugoslavia at midnight, lodging with pig farmers in Cyprus and hunting oysters on the Eastern seaboard. But the family would always return home to New York where Kat would watch films. "I would watch a handful of videos, including 'Mary Poppins' and 'The Little Mermaid,' then later 'The Last of the Mohicans' and 'The Man Who Would Be King,' hundreds of times, »

Blu-ray Review: The Roots Of Heaven

9 February 2012 6:35 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

John Huston was a master of the improbably optimistic protagonist in films. Many of his leading characters were people in search of some grand totem that would make their lives complete, or make the rich, or in some other way satisfy their basest urges. He did it with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon & The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, with Gregory Peck in his adaptation of Moby Dick, and Connery and Caine in The Man Who Would be King. The Roots of Heaven may be among his lesser known films, but it's protagonist Morel, played by Trevor Howard, has taken on no less a Herculean task, and his struggle takes on mythical proportions as he battles imperial African governments for the sake of »

After expressing his pride in being a member of the world's "second oldest profession," Christopher Plummer went on to say that actors may be "wacky" and the like, but winning an award from them is like to be "lit by the Holy Grail." Plummer also thanked his Beginners co-star Ewan McGregor, who "makes acting look so easy," and the film's writer-director Mike Mills for creating "such a human story." Inspired by Mills' relationship with his own father, Beginners is the tale of a son (McGregor) who learns that his elderly father (Plummer) is gay. Oscars: Christopher Plummer in the prime of his Oscar career – Awards Alley

5 January 2012 2:08 PM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

hollywoodnews.com: “The Sound of Music.” “The Insider.” “The Man Who Would Be King.” “Malcolm X.” “The New World.” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Now say this out loud. Christopher Plummer has only one Oscar nomination, and he received it in 2009 for “The Last Station.”

That’s a crime. But it likely could be rectified on Jan. 24, when the legendary actor (hopefully) will be recognized for his work on Mike Mills’ “Beginners.” Plummer plays Hal Fields, a closeted homosexual who finally comes out after his wife passes away … creating problems for his son (Ewan McGregor).

Plummer has been active on the awards trail, picking up nominations – and wins – from the Bfca, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Independent Spirit Awards, the L.A. Film Critics Association, the National Board of Review and the Screen Actors Guild or his tender, honest portrayal. But his awards journey »
