One of Al Adamson's more watchable films
22 June 2010 | by (Denver, Colorado and Santiago, Chile) – See all my reviews

I like Al Adamson IN SPITE of his movies. Having worked on several low-budget films in the early '90's(with even lower budgets than Al's, believe it or not), I admire the spirit of Adamson's film-making even if the movies are often borderline unwatchable. I'm not crazy about even his most famous horror movies like "Dracula vs. Frankenstein", but there were three types Adamson did fairly well (or at least almost competently)--Westerns ("Five Bloody Graves"), biker films (the classic "Satan's Sadists"), and female exploitation pictures ("The Female Bunch", "Girls for Rent"). This one is a Western AND a female exploitation picture. Sondra Currie plays a Mormon settler whose husband is killed by bandits while she herself is raped and left for dead. After being trained to shoot by a grizzled mountain man, she bands together with a gang of other wronged women to take revenge on her male assailants.

The action scenes here aren't incredibly effective (apparently Adamson couldn't even afford squibs for when someone gets shot), but the movie attains basic suspension of disbelief. Like most classic Westerns, this was filmed in Utah, so Adamson only really has to keep the beautiful scenery in focus and not allow too many anachronisms to enter the frame, which he generally manages. And speaking of beautiful scenery. ..

This movie has largely the same female cast as "The Female Bunch" made some five years earlier--Jennifer Bishop, Adamson's wife Regina Carrol, etc. The lead of this one, however, is Sondra Currie. Currie(the older sister of Cherie Currie of the 70's girl band The Runaways) kind of looked like a bustier version of Claudia Jennings. She was in a lot of TV shows and low-budget movies in the 1970's, but this is one of more tour-de-force performances. She starts out with a full-frontal nude bathing scene (unlike Claudia Jennings, Currie didn't necessarily ALWAYS get naked in her films). Then she has a rape scene, which doesn't go on nearly as long, but is almost as harrowing as Camille Keaton's in the rape-revenge classic "I Spit on Your Grave" (in fact, that later movie might very well have borrowed both from the scene in this movie and the woman-executes-mentally-retarded-man-during-sex scene from Adamson's "Girls for Rent"). Currie's subsequent revenge scenes are not as good or as believable as the early scenes, but she is always very easy to watch. I thought she was actually BETTER than Raquel Welch in the bigger budget "Hannie Caulder".

This is a long way from a masterpiece, but is definitely one of Adamson's more watchable films.
