This is one of the most uniquely funny Canadian comedies I've ever seen
29 September 2007 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This film takes place in the mid 70's in Montreal. Anthony Newley plays a poor English avant-garde artist who struggles with an ex-wife's remarriage to a big, fat building contractor. He happens to be very anti-establishment, despite (like most artists) peddling wares to the rich bourgeoisie more often than not. He upsets a political patronage supper (that his wife the social climber is also at) by inviting a bunch of freak show carnival people to crash it (similar to what Karl Rove did in the early 70's). Isaac Hayes the black American singer plays Newley's roommate, as an avant-garde sculptor who among other things, uses a welding torch in the creation process. The two of them (much to Hayes' chagrin) are the instigators of all the havoc in this film. In short, it is a movie about an underdog fighting for his true love, by attacking the horde that has consumed her in its path of consummation. P.S. if you want to see a really bad movie from the 70's, may I recommend "The World is Full of Married Men" an English comedy from 1979 by Jackie Collins.
