Trivia

Donald Pleasence's character, "A.J. Nietz", is named after prolific western / "B" picture director Alan James (real name Alvin J. Neitz), who started out in silent films and lasted through the talkie era, and who directed westerns with such stars as Ken Maynard, Jack Hoxie and Tim McCoy, among others. See more »

Goofs

When Richard B. Shull's character rips the list of studio phone numbers from the café wall, the list clearly has a nail hole and a tear at the top. When he holds the list against a phone booth window, the hole and the tear have both vanished. See more »

Quotes

Musical Director: Well, what do you think?
[after watching a proposed musical number with Polo]
Polo: If you enjoy entertaining the crew, not bad. Otherwise it belongs in a rehearsal hall. A rehearsal hall is where you REHEARSE. Not here - this is a soundstage.
Musical Director: Well, what should I do with it?
Polo: Well, the first thing I would do is get rid of that noodle in the pith helmet and then...
[gestures wearily]
Polo:
  • shoot it.

Pure style by Howard Zieff
23 June 2004 | by (sparks, nevada) – See all my reviews

This is one of the best of 1975 without a lot of heavy issues. It's about innocence and the American Dream with the perfect guy in the lead

  • a young Jeff Bridges. Alan Arkin is the perfect uptight East Coast

director in Hollywood and the lovely Blythe Danner shows qualities that her daughter became famous for. Zieff's film Slither with James Caan is also very much underrated. Andy Griffith is well-cast for only the second time (A Face in the Crowd being the other) and Donald Pleasance is an added treasure, all too briefly.

If you're in a normal mood this is the movie for you. A definite 8 out of 10 and nobody's seen it.
