First let me say that Foxtrot (alternatively titled: The Other Side of Paradise, the US re-issue title; or The Far Side of Paradise, the UK title) is an excellent film and magnificently acted by the principals: Peter O'Toole, Charlotte Rampling, and Max von Sydow. And a talented supporting cast do superlative job, too. (Naturally, Charlotte Rampling is absolutely stunning, as always.)
A user rating of 5.3 goes nowhere close to indicating the deserved merit of this film. The story is well written and suspenseful with a great deal to say on human nature; indeed, elements of Foxtrot's scenario and storyline are reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of the Red Death and William Golding's Lord of the Flies. Arturo Ripstein's direction is more than adequate with the talent he has to work with. Though not a blockbuster, but still very much commercially appealing, Foxtrot is a truly great film from the mid-1970s and it never got the recognition nor gained the currency it deserved. Hopefully, one day it will come out on DVD. I'd certainly recommend this film to those who like quality cinema.
