This is a typical TV suspense-mystery-thriller movie, on the bland side and not really generating much suspense, mystery or thrills, and not even good or colorful character interactions. The cast is first-rate, but they do not have much to work with. They remain mostly within the bounds of British restraint.
There are some twists that work. The story itself works enough to keep us watching to the end, but mind you I am not that demanding a viewer. I like movies and there are usually some elements in most movies to keep me engaged. This one does have some rather large plot holes or implausibilities that bring it down.
There is little or no chemistry between Christopher Lee and his mistress Judy Geeson. The side plot between Jon Finch and his mistress has no bearing on the story.
After reading many, many IMDb reviews, I have concluded that there is a systematic bias working in these reviews. It is that people tend to write glowing reviews when they like a movie and to avoid writing them when they dislike a movie. The result is that, although there are always some negative reviews, there are too many glowing ones.
An alternative hypothesis is that people tend to write when they have strong feelings, both positive and negative, because there are always a small number of reviews that hate movies. However, the glowing ones tend to outnumber the negative ones, I'm not sure why (under this theory).
At any rate, this effect seems to be at work for this movie. It has a few glowing reviews but not a high IMDb vote rating. The movie is OK or actually less than OK if one wants to be really critical, but it's surely no great thriller, in my opinion.
