An ex-Los Angeles bunco cop, Frank MacBride (Eddie Albert), had put his ex-con and future partner, Pete Ryan (Robert Wagner), in custody. Pete learned that he was corrupt in about everything he did. After his release, he worked with Mac, in a detective agency, working as a private investigator. They operated on the wrong side of the law, while pulling the "switches" that involved other con men. They concocted schemes that could result in double-crosses, double-crossing themselves. They also travelled to various places (inside, within or near Los Angeles) to assign cases that involved other con men, murders, and solving crimes. Assisting them on the cases were Malcolm Argos (Charlie Callas), Mac's part-time thief who also became a funny man, prior to opening up the restaurant that was recruited by them, and Maggie Philbin (Sharon Gless), a young, cute secretary and receptionist, who was ever, the all-around girl Friday.
