The machine of comedy isn't always funny
13 December 2009 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

"Saturday Night Live" has been on almost all my life and I can't remember a time when it wasn't on the conversational tip of somebody's opinion. The program that began in the mid 70s has had so many writers and/or performers, it's hard to find faces in entertainment who haven't appeared on it at sometime. And, unfortunately, the list of those who didn't get hired for some reason or other is alarming (such as Jim Carrey, Robert Townsend and John Candy).

The first head writer, Michael O'Donoghue, was an odd bird to put it politely. His legacy crossed over from the "National Lampoon" early years and exploded with some of the weirdest and most confrontational humour the world had ever seen. Read Dennis Perrin's excellent book "Mr. Mike: The Man Who Made Comedy Dangerous" for the whole story of this firebrand and his life's work.

My favourites are always going to be Dan Aykroyd and now, the woman I think is the most talented female they've ever had there, Kristen Wiig. Gilda Radner was great, don't get me wrong, but when we're evaluating who can go way out on a limb and play certain things no one else really can, I'd say Wiig has the female equivalent of the crazed energy and mind Aykroyd brought on initially and established a new place for the "utility" player on the show.

My complaints these days are largely with the writing and the shameless chasing after of the youth demographic. Can Lorne Michaels get some more hosts who are old enough to buy alcohol? And let's get more writers who didn't come from Second City and/or Harvard! Those aren't the only places comic talent emerges from.

The dismissal of great talents Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson not too long ago was a big mistake and the lack of genuine laughs this 2009-10 season is almost certainly a direct result of that decision. Have you laughed out loud at anything on the show lately? Probably not. There's a tremendous difference between what's merely amusing and what is roaringly funny. Let's hope for a renewal of what made SNL worth watching in the first place.

The rating of 7 is due to the format of the show which really hasn't altered more than an iota or two all this time. How can you judge an institution that is far from over and has had so many acts in the last thirty plus years? A comedy program should end with one wanting more, not feeling like they've suffered through too much of the inferior and not enough of the great. If Michaels is unwilling to modify what weakens his baby, then we'll be stuck with a program only using less than half of it's full potential.

Hosts I'd like to see soon: Linda Cardellini, Eddie Izzard, Casey Wilson, Henry Rollins, Lady Gaga and Patton Oswalt.

My suggestions for future sketches: (If you see any of these in the shows ahead, you'll know someone stole MY lame ideas, because these aren't taken from any SNL writers!)

"The 10 Timer's Club": The next hosting gig for double Oscar winner Tom Hanks should poke fun at his status among the show's all time most frequent MCs. Remember when they did "The 5 Timer's Club"? Well, for a change in pecking order, let's leave poor Tom (and, as a special guest, mere 6 timer Christopher Walken) out in the cold (temporarily) as Steve Martin, John Goodman and Alec Baldwin party inside their super exclusive double digit host clubhouse.

"I Don't 'Do' Talk Shows!": J.D. Salinger (to be played by the great Fred Armisen) and Jack Nicholson (the incomparable Darrell Hammond) commiserate on a public access show about what their public thinks of them and what they really feel about their fan bases. Who wouldn't want to see some version of Salinger confront the lunatic fringe who've ruined "The Catcher In The Rye"? (That was written before the publicity shy great author died. RIP Mr. Salinger!)

"Australian Bandstand": Since Jimmy Fallon loves playing Barry Gibb so much, let's have him as the oldest Bee Gee brother (and Justin Timberlake as younger bro Robin "No... No, I don't" Gibb) host an affectionate drubbing of down under talent like Yahoo Serious, Kylie Minogue, AC/DC and Air Supply (they're Aussies, aren't they?).

And, why not have something appropriate for the YouTube era, an update of the "Anybody Can Host" contest from the late 70s? Just some thoughts.
