Amy Robach On Getting Personal On ‘Gma': ‘I Don’t Tell Them Everything’

15 August 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Amy Robach has a unique take on the morning-show wars. She is a veteran of “Today” (she anchored the show’s weekend edition) and a relative newbie at “Good Morning America”  (which she joined as a correspondent in 2012). So she has insight into both sides of the battle.

Her time at “Gma” has been marked by an experience most people would prefer to avoid. In October of last year, Robach received a mammogram on air during “Gma,” and then disclosed a month later that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her willingness to share parts of her ordeal on TV made for compelling TV and garnered significant attention.

George Stephanopoulos’ ‘Good Morning America’ Secret: ‘You Can’t Act’

15 August 2014 9:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

You have to wonder how George Stephanopoulos is going to do it: Here’s a guy that by his own account gets up most days at around 2:30 in the morning to prepare himself not only for hosting duties on ”Good Morning America,” but also the possibility a “crisis” moment could happen that will require him to anchor an ABC News special report for hours.

Stephanopoulos already had a pretty rigorous schedule as co-anchor of “Gma,” and anchor each week of the Sunday-news program “This Week.” Now he will have to stand ready beyond early-morning hours and weekends, part of a strategy put into place by ABC News in June that makes him the “face” of the division when truly momentous events take place, whether they be a big election or a terrorist attack.

Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb Reveal All About ‘Happy Hour’ On ‘Today’

15 August 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s not the questions and answers that matter when you interview Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. When queried, Kotb and Gifford provide a ready response, to be sure– but they might wander a bit before arriving at a destination.

At a time of day when many TV stations air talk shows with a how-to bent or an issue-oriented focus, NBC simply lets these two run with their own ball in a fourth hour of “Today” that is decidedly unlike the other three. Their interplay, hard to duplicate, has provided fodder for spoofs on “Saturday Night Live,” and seems light-years away from the newsy intro that marks the program’s first few minutes each day at 7 a.m.

Does it matter? The duo’s intricate back-and-forth has gained enough traction that many NBC outlets air it again at 2 a.m., where it provides a warm embrace to insomniacs and college kids. »

Natalie Morales, Al Roker On The Modern Morning Show: ‘We Have Become Very Interactive’

For many people, “Today” wouldn’t be “Today” without Natalie Morales and Al Roker.

The show’s news anchor and meteorologist have been with the program since 2006 and 1996, respectively. These days, when the show comes on the air, the camera is on four people – Morales and Roker as well as Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie – not just the two leads. It’s all part of a new and broader focus on all the hosts of NBC’s four hours of toast-and-orange-juice programming that comes as the Peacock works to revamp the program to make it more competitive in the intense morning-show wars.

Robin Roberts Explains The ‘Good Morning America’ Attitude: ‘This Is How We Roll’

14 August 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Robin Roberts is best known as a morning-show anchor, but her tenure as such has also transformed her into something much more.

Roberts, who has held the co-anchor chair at ABC’s “Good Morning America” since 2005, has grappled with many things during her tenure on the show: the death of her parents and a struggle with bone-marrow disease myelodysplastic syndrome. Her willingness to talk about parts of her private life has made her an inspirational figure to some.

Some TV executives may argue it is Roberts’ willingness to share with her viewers that has helped fuel interest in “Good Morning America,” and has certainly played some role in the program’s rise to number one.

Below, in a lightly edited interview, Roberts holds forth on the show’s freewheeling bent, her decisions to let viewers in on her personal life and the show’s story mix:

‘Today’ Co-Host Savannah Guthrie Gives Birth To Daughter

14 August 2014 6:38 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

One of the top stories on NBC’s “Today” this morning was a story about “Today” itself: After five months of segments about changing diapers, blog posts about the ups and downs of pregnancy and even an on-air baby shower, co-host Savannah Guthrie has given birth to a new daughter, Vale.

The baby was born early Wednesday, weighing 8 pounds and 5 ounces, the show announced in a statement.

Matt Lauer, the veteran “Today” host who in a recent interview with Variety cited Guthrie’s elevation to co-host in 2012 as one of the main reasons why he decided to sign for a new term with the program this year, announced details during the program. According to Lauer, he had been texting with Guthrie when communication ceased. After asking if everything was all right, he received a picture of a baby’s foot.

Academy’s Robin Williams Tweet Criticized by Suicide Prevention Group

13 August 2014 6:24 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A tweet from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences about Robin Williams’ death has proven popular, but not with one suicide-prevention group.

The tweet, sent out Monday at 5:56 p.m., shows the genie from the 1992 “Aladdin” with the message, “Genie, you’re free,” which is a line from the film. The item was retweeted more than 320,000 times and received a staggering 69 million impressions. The Internet and Twitter have been filled with tributes to Williams, who voiced the genie in the film.

However, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention worries about the subliminal message. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer at the Afsp, expressed concern about the tweet, telling the Washington Post Tuesday, “Suicide should never be presented as an option,” before adding, “(it) presents suicide in too celebratory a light.”
