I've rated "Les Suspects" as somewhat below par and below the current IMDb rating of 6.3 to indicate that I think it falls rather flat. This is not for want of trying to be good. It has a terrific cast. It maintains interest by a complex screenplay that involves parallel police investigations by different officials of the murder of Mimsy Farmer. It inserts flashbacks that keep us interested. It has a panoply of different characters, and here it becomes clichéd. And yet the overall impact is not satisfying. Something is missing. The tone of the film is wry and sardonic, critical of the police and human failings in the investigations, but it doesn't win us over. We get to know a few of the characters quite well, such as those of Farmer and Paul Meurisse, but others remain rather blank. The movie is not a complete misfire but it's heading in that direction.
