Trivia

On the first day of production, Charles Bronson got angry about a delay caused by a late transport truck carrying cars necessary for the scene that was to be shot. Finally, he yelled to director Richard Fleischer within earshot of the entire crew, "You know what this company needs - it needs a European first assistant and a European crew!" The crew was so insulted by this remark that at the end of the day, they told Fleischer they would be leaving the production. They were persuaded to stay, but for the rest of the shoot they never spoke to Bronson unless they absolutely had to. Later in the shoot, Bronson commented to Fleischer, "I just don't understand it. Nobody calls me 'Charlie' on this picture. They only call me 'Mr. Bronson'." See more »

You'll rue the day you messed with Bronson's melons.
3 September 2007 | by (the Mad Hatter's tea party.) – See all my reviews

Vince Majestyk a melon farmer trying to get his melons picked is disrupted when his charged for assaulting the no-good Bobby Kopas and finds himself in jail. This when Majestyk gets on the wrong side of Mafia hit man Frank Renda, after some mobsters tried to break out Frank. Majestyk keeps him hostage, in the hope of making a deal with police to overturn his charges. However Frank escapes, and vows revenge on Majestyk. Due to his obsession for it, Frank gets Kopas to drop the charges. Majestyk heads back to his farm, but finds out that Frank wants to spoil his only goal.

A strong, if under seen Charles Bronson vehicle is one of my favourites of his long list of work. To begin with the migrant cheap labour subtext is quite obvious in its social statement, but it's the battle of wills, for one's ego between Bronson, Lettieri and Koslo's characters within Elmore Leonard's dry, melodramatic screenplay (from his novel) and striking dialogues from the hardened script, which really does feed the hunger. The three have one thing on mind, and go about it accordingly, as their differing personalities go onto drive them, and probably going on to help with their downfall. Director Richard Fleischer sparely engineers the picture with deadpan grit, as the pacing is rather relaxed and the action impulsively breaks out with intensely rough, no-bars intent. It's pretty much a bloody pulp. Charles Bernstein's lively, adept musical score had that down-to-earth, but uncanny harmonious twang that seems to gel with the visually dusty, earthy and spacious Colorado backdrop. It must've been bright, because Bronson couldn't stop squinting. The scenically lean photography by Richard H. Kline is expressively tight and adds another important dimension in the film's ever growing character. Charles Bronson is stoic as-ever, but credibly feels right at home and his weary image dominates perfectly. It's a genuine turn. However it's the support cast that ignites the story. Al Lettieri is animatedly good as the firebrand mafia hit man Frank and Paul Koslo is terrific as the scummy, wet-behind-ears wannabe Bobby. Those two had great chemistry! Linda Cristal held her own along side Bronson, and the gorgeous Linda Purcell provides able support.

Everything about this one feels freshly handled and downright gripping, even with its slow progression.
